The Babysitter 3 Already Planned From Original Director

WARNING: Major spoilers for The Babysitter: Killer Queen

McG, the director of Netflix’s latest comedy horror The Babysitter: Killer Queen, confirms he has plans for another sequel if fans want to see it. The director also took the helm on the first film, The Babysitter, which was something of a surprise hit for Netflix. A sequel, which reunites the cast, including Judah Lewis (Cole), Samara Weaving (Bee), and Emily Alyn Lind (Melanie), has just been released on the streaming giant. However, reviews say it’s not as fun or original as the first. The introduction of the new character Phoebe (Jenna Ortega) and the revelation that Melanie is the villain this time around give the film a hollow feeling and retcon some of the more fun elements from the first.

One of the reasons for the change in direction is not only to keep the material feeling fresh but that a new writing team tackled the script, one which included McG, who has never written a blockbuster in his 20 years of directing. It seems the director was attempting to upend the hierarchy established in the original Babysitter, something that ends up failing for the most part. The final act reveals that the returning character Bee was acting from a good place in the original seems to come out of nowhere and is a little rushed. Nevertheless, the film delivers more of what fans loved from the original, and Killer Queen may well turn out to be another sleeper hit for Netflix. If so, a third film seems likely.

And it turns out McG has anticipated that, telling CBR that he’s already got plans for the third film in a trilogy. Saying that if The Babysitter: Killer Queen is successful enough to get another sequel greenlit, he wants to “conclude” Cole’s narrative arc. McG adds that he loved creating the twists in the second movie, and that’s he’s got some more lined up for a potential trilogy-ender. You can read his full comments below:

We have the story and I firmly put it in the hands of the audience: If the audience wants it, they’ll see it and we’ll do it and, if they say “No, I don’t like this” then we won’t. And I would would love to because I would love to conclude the arc of the Cole character. I love the surprises from the second movie, I love that Melanie is the bad guy — I like to flip a card at the end of the first act and, whoops, it’s Melanie! In the third act, I flip another card, that it was all under control by Bee and Bee was Phoebe’s original babysitter and she’s the one that sold her soul for good purposes whereas all the other kids, as a reflection of social media and its influence, sold their souls for lightweight purposes. I love those surprises and there’s a couple of big surprises left for the third one.

What those twists could be is anyone’s guess, but given that the second film’s mid-credits scene teases the demon book Melanie had in her possession still exists, don’t be surprised if the writers place it in the hands of another familiar character from the franchise. There’s even the possibility that Cole could become involved in the cult, given that he’s still struggling with where he fits in the high school hierarchy at the end of The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and is no longer considered innocent after sleeping with Phoebe.

Of course, McG might also choose to introduce an entirely new set of characters for the third film, mostly since Bee and her crew of teenage demons all perished, apparently for real this time, at the end of the second movie. What’s not in doubt is that the director is keen to continue the franchise. But first, The Babysitter: Killer Queen is going to have to resonate with fans.
