The Baby-Sitters Club: The 10 Funniest Characters

The Baby-Sitters Club: The 10 Funniest Characters

Netflix’s adaptation of The Baby-Sitters Club is now in its second season. Season 2 brought back all of the same faces but also added two new babysitters to the group, Jessi and Mallory. With new characters in the mix, there are more personalities to identify with or grow to love. There’s also a handful of funny characters that bring comedic moments that the show needs at times.

Sometimes the parents of the main characters add comedic relief to the young teen drama, while other times, it’s the youngest character who brings the most laughs. Either way, The Baby-Sitters Club has subtle funny moments from unsuspecting characters.

Mary Anne Spier

The Baby-Sitters Club: The 10 Funniest Characters

In season 1, Mary Anne Spier overcame her shyness by working with her friends and having open communication with her overbearing father. Once Mary Anne spoke her mind, she was able to come into her own and blossom into the young woman she was destined to be.

The more she opened up, the funnier she became. Mary Anne wasn’t outwardly funny with jokes or facial expressions; instead, her nerves and neuroses came off as comical because they were so relatable. Being in middle school and having crushes is not always easy, and Mary Anne showed a lighter side to those challenging moments.

Stacey McGill

Stacey smiling in The Baby-Sitters Club

Stacey McGill is one of the most fashionable characters in The Baby-Sitters Club. Hailing from New York, Stacey was first recognized for her great style. Once her Stoneybrook friends got to know her on a deeper level, they found out how smart and mature she was.

Due to her maturity, she’s not the silliest member of the group but she does let her funnier side show when boys are involved. Like her friends, Stacey is boy crazy in seasons 1 and 2. The things she does to get her crush’s attention are comical because she’s so endearing and earnest.

Claudia Kishi

Claudia and Stacey greeting someone at a door on The Baby-Sitters Club

Like Stacey, Claudia is also known for her fashion moments. Claudia is also the goofiest of the group. She loves expressing herself through art and fashion, oftentimes going out of her comfort zone to further solidify her individuality.

Some of Claudia’s funniest moments are when she’s talking about her love for sweets and snacks or when she’s conquering a project with her friends. One of her funniest moments was when she redecorated Mary Anne’s room in season 1, where she really let herself loose to get into her craft.

Sharon Porter

Richard and Sharon sitting at a table on The Baby-Sitter's Club

When viewers first met Sharon Porter, she was introduced as Dawn’s single mom. The two moved back to Stoneybrook from California. As it turned out, Sharon and Mary Anne’s dad, Richard, were high school sweethearts. And with Richard being a widow, he and Sharon rekindled their romance decades after breaking up.

What makes this couple work so well is how different Sharon and Richard are. Richard is very serious and nervous, whereas Sharon is free, easy-going, and spiritual. Her love for life and freedom brings some silly moments. Out of the parents on the show, Sharon is one of the funniest because of her go-with-the-flow nature. She is a favorite side character for fans.

Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer

Elizabeth and her husband hugging in an episode of The Baby-Sitters Club

Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer is Kristy Thomas’s loving mom. In season 1, Elizabeth was a single mother of four kids who wore many hats. The beautiful thing about Elizabeth is that she didn’t care about failing or looking silly — what mattered was that she was trying her best. Due to her ability to delegate duties at home and work as a realtor, she was one of the smartest characters on The Baby-Sitters Club.

In season 2, Elizabeth was newly married and toying with the idea of having another baby. Her realness about being a working mom was raw and hilarious. She’s a fun part of the series.

Watson Brewer

Watson Brewer talking to someone outside in an episode of The Baby Sitters Club

Watson Brewer is Kristy’s stepfather and Elizabeth’s new husband. While Kristy wasn’t sure of Watson at first, he’s been an uplifting and positive presence in the series. He’s light-hearted, caring, and hard-working. Kristy didn’t make Watson’s life easy as a new stepdaughter but he never gave up hope. In fact, some of the worst things Kristy did was to the new additions of her family. However, they all eventually came together.

There were times where Watson’s humor embarrassed Kristy, but it’s hard not to laugh along with him. His outgoing personality is infectious.

Kristy Thomas

Kristy Thomas comes off as a little rude and judgemental but she means well. She’s incredibly driven, serious, and her humor is rather dry. But once those around her pick up on her quirks, she’s easy to laugh with.

Kristy’s desire for perfection and order can be annoying at times, but she’s more forgiving in season 2. She found a way to laugh at herself and it has made her a more likable friend and daughter.  In fact, her friends in the Baby-Sitters Club rely on Kristy for order, honesty, and organization.

Janine Kishi

Janine talking to her sister at home in an episode of The Baby-Sitters Club

Claudia isn’t the only funny one in the Kishi family. Her older sister Janine is also hilarious in a dry way. While Claudia is outwardly humorous and wears bright colors to match her sparkling personality, Janine is stone-faced, brilliant, and keeps to herself; she’s funny without meaning to be. Due to her contrasting personality, Janine adds a level of humor that The Baby-Sitter’s Club wouldn’t have without her.

In season 2, The Baby-Sitters Club tackled deep issues in relation to Janine’s sexuality and the death of her dear grandmother, but Janine never changed as a person despite life’s ups and downs. And sure, Claudia often finds her sister more annoying than humorous, but it’s hard not to laugh at Janine’s raw responses.

Mallory Pike

Mallory Pike sitting next to Jessi at Claudia's house on The Baby-Sitters Club

New characters Mallory and Jessi were added at the end of season 1. The Baby-Sitters Club members met them at Camp Moosehead and added them to their club in season 2. While Jessi was dedicated to her love of dance, Mallory was hilariously trying to find herself in a new group of friends.

As one of the younger members, Mallory was funny because she wanted so badly to be like those she envied. She eventually learned that no one was like her and that she had to embrace her own individuality, but she was hilarious on her mission. From trying to get along with the kids she was babysitting to wanting Claudia to dress her, Mallory was eager and funny.

Karen Brewer

Karen talking to a baby sitter while playing dolls on The Baby Sitter's Club

Kristy’s stepsister, Karen Brewer, is one of the funniest characters in the series. She has a dark sense of humor and is obsessed with scary stories, ghosts, and history. She’s not like anyone else in the series and stands out among the rest when she’s onscreen.

In a lot of ways, Karen is like The Addams Family’s Wednesday Addams. Kristy and Elizabeth roll their eyes at Karen’s sense of humor, but it’s hard not to chuckle at how theatrical and dramatic she is for being so young.
