The Arrowverse’s Crisis On Infinite Earths Could’ve Fixed A Cancelled DC TV Show’s Ending

Krypton‘s ending could have been made better months after the show’s cancellation in the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Throughout the years, the Arrowverse — DC’s shared TV universe — became known for its annual crossover events. From a small team-up between Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow and Grant Gustin’s Flash to an adaptation of the seminal multiverse story Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Arrowverse managed to tell engaging stories with a plethora of DC heroes and villains, something James Gunn’s DC Universe hopes to make a fixture of the many planned DC movies and series.

Crisis on Infinite Earths was the last major Arrowverse crossover, and it was the universe’s best. The multiverse story allowed for the team behind the Arrowverse to merge characters from past DC movies and series with heroes like Amell’s Oliver Queen. Crisis on Infinite Earths included plenty of exciting characters among its roster of guests, which featured names like Brandon Routh as Superman, Smallville‘s Tom Welling and Erica Durance, Ezra Miller’s DCEU version of the Flash, and more. However, a missing character could have given a canceled DC show its best ending.

Why Krypton Was Cancelled After Only Two Seasons

Syfy’s Superman prequel Krypton has been cancelled after just two seasons, and the channel has also turned down spinoff series Lobo.

Krypton’s Seg-El Actor Almost Returned In Crisis On Infinite Earths

Cameron Cuffe Was In Talks To Reprise His Role

On his website, Marc Guggenheim, the long-time Arrowverse producer who was the creative in charge of Crisis on Infinite Earths, recently talked about Krypton‘s Cameron Cuffe not being able to appear in the crossover. When asked about which actors he had tried to recruit for the Arrowverse crossover but did not manage to make it work, Guggenheim mentioned Cuffe. The creative said, We’d originally written Hour One (the Supergirl episode) to feature a cameo by Cameron Cuffe, who (w)as playing Seg-El on Krypton. Cameron was delightful to deal with but we couldn’t align our shooting schedule with his.”

Cuffe played the lead role of Seg-El in Krypton. The often-forgotten DC series took place several years before Superman was born, following the life of his grandfather, Cuffe’s Seg-El. Krypton ran for two seasons on Syfy before the show was cancelled in August 2019, just days after its season 2 finale aired. With the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover seeing its first episode debut in December 2019, Cuffe’s return as Se-El would have come only four months after Krypton’s cancellation, and it could have been used to answer the series’ many questions.

The Series’ Cancellation Left Many Hanging Threads

While Cuffe would not have returned for a major role in Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Arrowverse crossover could still have used the actor’s return to provide answers for Krypton‘s finale. As the show was canceled after Krypton‘s two seasons had finished airing, the team behind the Superman prequel series had no chance of crafting a series finale for the show, which resulted in Krypton‘s ending setting up multiple cliffhangers that have never been resolved. The planned Lobo spinoff series could have helped give answers to the fate of Krypton‘s characters, but it was canceled before making it to series.

Cuffe’s role in Crisis on Infinite Earths was previously revealed to have been that of a Kryptonian elder who had vital information about the destruction of the multiverse. That Kryptonian elder could very well have been an older version of Seg-El, which would have allowed for details about the past of Cuffe’s character — which would have been Seg-El’s future after Krypton season 2 — to be revealed. The answers to Nyssa’s seeming teleportation to Thanagar, the Darkseid Omega symbol she finds on the wall, Jor-El’s fate, how Zod returns and more could have come in the Arrowverse crossover.

Is There Any Hope For Krypton Season 3 To Happen?

The Series Fits The Elseworlds Brand

Adam Strange in Krypton Season 2

Krypton was canceled in 2019. As almost five years have passed since the announcement of the end of the show, it would be very difficult for the series to come back. However, it is not impossible. In fact, one of the new additions to DC’s live-action efforts going forward is perfect for a possible Krypton season 3. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has revealed that movies and series not canon to the new DC Universe will exist under the Elseworlds label.

As Krypton took place in DC’s distant past, following Superman’s grandfather, the series was far removed from any stories Gunn’s DCU could adapt. With Krypton telling the story of a hero from the future, Adam Strange, who traveled to the past to get help from Seg-El to save Superman, thus altering history, the project is the perfect definition of an Elseworlds story. A final season to resolve the series’ hanging threads would be all that is necessary, allowing Krypton season 3 to show how DC’s Elseworlds brand can work and bring back old fans of the show to Gunn’s DCU.
