Ashley wants nothing more than to be taken seriously as a superhero—she can’t help it that things don’t always go as planned! And when the Teen Titans roll into town chasing after their infamous nemesis, Deathstroke, Ashley will put her powers to the test to prove that Primer has what it takes to join the team.

What captures fan speculation and attention is that this cover art of the Titans features the same designs as the ones seen in the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon series. This new comic series written by Jennifer Muro and Thomas Krajewski will feature the eccentric paint-based hero, Primer, proving her worth to the Teen Titans. The story will see the Teen Titans come to Primer’s hometown to fight their old nemesis, Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke. This is another day at the office for the Titans, but Primer sees this as a golden opportunity.

Primer Wants To Be A Teen Titan

Primer’s ultimate dream is to be a superhero and, more importantly, to join the best team of young heroes, the Teen Titans. This young spitfire artist debuted in 2020’s Primer four-part miniseries by Muro, Krajewski and Lusky, which tells her origin story. Born Ashley Rayburn, she lived in foster care with her father until she accidentally got him accused of murder. After bouncing from other foster homes and accidentally hurting her foster mom Yuka Nolan, Ashley gains a love for spray paint and graffiti art. When she turns 13, Ashley finds a Zecromax Labs briefcase hidden by her foster mom with 33 body paint colors containing metahuman abilities.

Ashley steals these body paints and uses her friend Luke’s blonde wig as a secret identity to fight crime as Primer. As Primer, Ashley has access to all kinds of powers based on the color of the metahuman body paint. These color abilities include flight, teleportation, power mimicry, and even invulnerability. With her youthful energy and knowledge of this body paint, Primer would fit right in with the Teen Titans. In fact, Ashley joins the Teen Titans Academy shortly after her debut and works her hardest to overcome her clumsiness and learn to better control her abilities. In this new three-issue miniseries, it’s finally Primer’s time to shine alongside the Titans.

Primer and the Teen Titans Are Kickstarting A New Era of YA Comics

Primer will finally have her chance to officially join the animated Teen Titans as they go to war against Deathstroke. The publisher’s DC Graphic Novels for Young Adults initiative has produced some incredible stories that have introduced a new wave of younger superheroes. The new Teen Titans graphic novels by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo, The Strange Case of Harleen and Harley by Melissa Marr and Jenn St-Onge, and Static: Up All Night by Lamar Giles and Paris Alleyne are just the few latest examples of popular DC YA comics. Primer’s newest YA adventures will continue this amazing trend of young DC heroes following in the footsteps of the Teen Titans and other proven heroes.
