The 2024 Oscars Continue A Great Greta Gerwig Streak Despite Her Snub

The 2024 Oscars Continue A Great Greta Gerwig Streak Despite Her Snub

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the nominations for the 2024 Oscars on January 23, and Greta Gerwig surprisingly didn’t receive a nod in the Best Director category for her work on Barbie. However, a (pleasantly) shocking nomination in a different category continued one of the filmmaker’s streaks at the Oscars. Although the Academy didn’t recognize Gerwig for directing the highest-grossing movie of 2023 and the highest-grossing film for a female director ever, they did applaud the work of someone else who worked on the fantasy comedy.

Overall, Barbie received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Ryan Gosling for Best Supporting Actor, America Ferrera for Best Supporting Actress, Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for Best Adapted Screenplay, Jacqueline Durran for Best Costume Design, Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer for Best Production Design, “I’m Just Ken” for Best Original Song, and “What Was I Made For” for Best Original Song. The 2023 film has a shot at winning a handful of these categories, including one that continues Gerwig’s streak. But many couldn’t help but feel disappointed by Gerwig’s Best Director snub and Margot Robbie’s Best Actress snub.

Greta Gerwig’s Last Three Movies Have All Produced Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominations

Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial career began with Lady Bird, which premiered in 2017, followed by Little Women in 2019, and Barbie in 2023. All of her films have received numerous nominations at the Oscars over the years, including three Best Supporting Actress nods for her three separate projects. Laurie Metcalf was nominated for her role as Marion McPherson in Lady Bird; Florence Pugh received recognition for playing Amy March in Little Women; and now, America Ferrera is nominated for her work as Gloria in Barbie.

Gerwig is three for three for directing movies that result in Best Supporting Actress nominations at the Academy Awards, which is an impressive streak, to say the least. It’s even more commendable given that Gerwig has only (solely) directed three feature films. However, neither Metcalf nor Pugh took home the award in their respective ceremonies, and only time will tell if Ferrera can pull out a win.

The nominations for the 2024 Oscars were announced, and the Academy has shockingly snubbed Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in two separate categories.

Will America Ferrera Be Greta Gerwig’s First Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner?

Barbie America Ferreira as Gloria

Unfortunately, America Ferrera is not the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars. She is nominated alongside Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, Jodie Foster for Nyad, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers. Randolph previously won Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards and the 2024 Critics’ Choice Awards, so Randolph is the current frontrunner in the category at the 96th Academy Awards. Of course, upsets happen all the time, and Ferrera could be Greta Gerwig’s first Best Supporting Actress win at the Oscars.
