The 10 Strangest Friendships In The Arrowverse

The 10 Strangest Friendships In The Arrowverse

A lonely superhero can achieve many great things, but a team or at least a group of friends often works even better. After all, if two or more people put their minds together, they’re bound to solve problems that a single person wouldn’t know how to deal with. The Arrowverse is full of such examples. Even the superheroes who originally claimed that would work alone, such as Oliver Queen, formed a large team in the end.

If the Arrowverse excels in something, it’s creating compelling relationships, be it family bonds, romances, or friendships. Some of the best friendships have already become iconic. However, it’s intriguing to think about which friendships came across as somewhat strange. Either because they were portrayed in an unusual way or because the two friends seemed to have very little in common at first.

Caitlin Snow And Frost

The 10 Strangest Friendships In The Arrowverse

Caitlin gained her ice powers in the third season. Subsequently, she started hearing Frost’s voice in her head and her ‘evil’ alternative ego sometimes took over. They didn’t get along initially but eventually became friends. Being a friends with one’s alternative personality is unique, even for the Arrowverse. When Frost got her own body, she and Caitlin grew even closer and Caitlin calls Frost her sister these days.

Frost And Ralph Dibny

Frost and Ralph Dibny work together.

Even though they worked side by side as a team, Killer Frost and Ralph Dibny aka the Elongated Man were very different. On paper, their friendship sounds impossible since Frost is cool and emotionally detached. Ralph, on the other hand, is goofy and awkward sometimes. Yet, they made it work, and Ralph did his best to cheer Frost up whenever she was feeling sad.

Mick Rory And Mona Wu

Speaking of friends with different personalities, there’s also the case of Mick and Mona. Mick is a man of few words, and he can look grumpy and always seems ready to fight with most people. Mona, however, always sees the best in others, is optimistic by nature, and also awkward around others.

They bonded over their shared love for Mick’s romance novels, and, from there on, they worked well as a duo. Mona has now left the show to continue writing romance novels under Mick’s penname, which was his suggestion.

Kara Danvers And Lena Luthor

Kara and Lena hug in Supergirl

Kara and Lena are the ultimate proof that even people who should be enemies by all rights can become friends. Except, that it doesn’t usually end well.

Kara shows a lot of understanding for Lena, which is something the other woman appreciates, and they strike a friendship. However, Kara also lies to Lena about her true identity which drives a wedge between them in the end.

Eobard Thawne And The Team Flash

The Flash Flash Back Review Barry Allen Eobard Thawne.

When Eobard Thawne still wore the face of Harrison Wells, he befriended Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin. He served as their mentor and helped Barry hone his powers. All three trusted Wells but unlike the team Flash, the audience knew that Wells was hiding something and were suspicious of their friendship. It turned out they were right when Wells revealed his true identity and fought the team.

Moira Queen And Malcolm Merlyn

Moira and Malcolm sit on a couch together.

It might be a stretch to call these two friends… but, once upon a time, that’s exactly who they were—and more, since Moira had her daughter Thea with Malcolm but didn’t tell him. They got along in the past but even then, their dynamic was strange since there was something more between Moira and Malcolm.

In the present day, Moira seemingly worked alongside Malcolm but she also tried to kill him and he kidnapped her husband. Needless to say, their friendship was far from perfect.

John Constantine And Gary Green

Legends of Tomorrow Gary Green and Charlie help John Constantine.

John isn’t as much of a bad guy as he would have liked others to believe. In fact, he cares about his friends, no matter how much he can grumble and complain sometimes.

But, he and Gary are so diametrically different that it’s a miracle they were able to become friends. John even started teaching Gary magic. Their friendship turns out to be even stranger in retrospect, as Legends of Tomorrow recently revealed that Gary is, in fact, an alien.

Felicity Smoak And Laurel Lance

Laurel, Felicity and Dinah go through files together.

Be it the Black Siren from Earth-2 or the original Laurel Lance, in both cases, her friendship with Felicity is somewhat strange. With the original Laurel, there was still the fact that she and Oliver used to be together and it was quite serious.

Laurel even later acknowledged that Oliver always was the love of her life. As for the Earth-2 Laurel, she used to be a criminal, and Felicity wasn’t always so forgiving of criminals in the past. Yet, she somehow got over it in this case.

Nyssa Al Ghul And Oliver Queen

Oliver and Nyssa get married in the Arrowverse.

Considering how much they’ve been through together—and not in a good way—it’s a small miracle Oliver and Nyssa managed to become friends. Her father forced them to marry, and, if Nyssa didn’t say yes, he’d be done with her.

There’s also the fact that Oliver and Nyssa both dated Sara, and, after she dumped Nyssa, she started dating Oliver again. They also clashed on multiple occasions, like when Thea unknowingly killed Sara. Despite that, after Oliver was gone, Nyssa still honored their friendship by training his daughter Mia.

Oliver Queen And Kara Danvers

Arrow and Supergirl don old suits in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Finally, there’s also the friendship between Kara and Oliver. At first, Oliver couldn’t get over the fact that Kara was an alien since it totally defied his worldview, what he knew and was comfortable with. Despite the fact that he had trouble accepting her existence, they became friends in the end.

But, it was still a stretch that Oliver was willing to give up his life for Kara, even though he didn’t know her so well at the time—to give up his life for Barry, yes, but Kara? Debatable. But, then again, Oliver is a good person so it’s no wonder even he and Kara hit it off in the end.
