Though it hadn’t been officially confirmed, Deadpool 3 has been in development for a while, and now, not only has the movie been confirmed, but it has been announced that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine for the threequel. The news has elicited enormous amounts of excitement, as it’s an on-screen pairing that fans have wanted since the first Deadpool movie in 2016.
While some are concerned that it could ruin Logan’s perfect ending, the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, and some even hilarious. Between demanding yellow spandex, suggesting jokes for the movie, and guessing the film’s box office gross, the news is almost overwhelming.
The Old School Outfit
User SalaciousDumb isn’t the only Redditor who wants to see Wolverine in his comic-accurate attire, exclaiming, “Yellow suit time!” Fans have wanted to see this for literally decades, but 20th Century Fox never delivered. However, if Professor Xavier showing up in his yellow wheelchair in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is any indication, it is completely possible.
Where other movie studios have always been hesitant to give superheroes comic-accurate outfits, Marvel Studios has always embraced that. And as the new series X-Men ’97 will be on Disney+ next year, fans will get the yellow outfit either way, even if it is animated.
But Wolverine Died
Redditor Thecatnipster questions how Wolverine can be in the movie after he died at the end of the character’s swan song movie, Logan. The Redditor comments, “Somehow, Wolverine returned.” The Redditor is referencing the line in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, “Somehow, Palpatine Returned,” which has now become iconic, but not for the right reasons.
The Star Wars line was turned into a meme and the film was ridiculed for bringing back the Emperor without any explanation as to how it was possible. It’ll be interesting to see how the threequel brings the character back from the dead, and as Deadpool breaks the fourth wall so often, it’s easy to imagine him simply saying “Somehow, Wolverine returned” himself with no other explanation.
It Will Come Full Circle
Ryan Reynolds first played Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the character was completely botched. Not only did he not have any of the trademarks that makes Deadpool so great, but the Merc with the Mouth’s mouth was literally sewn shut. It has become a running joke in the Deadpool movie franchise, and Fightmaxmaster has an idea on how to bring that full circle.
The Redditor pitches, “It would really be full circle if Hugh Jackman plays some s***** version of Wolverine like Deadpool was in the X-Men Origins film.” While that joke might go over some viewers’ heads, it could work. And as the MCU is now in the Multiverse Saga, the characters could even visit the universe where Origins‘ reality exists.
More R-Rated Wolverine

Sign me up.” 2017’s Logan delivered on what fans had wanted to see for years, Wolverine actually slicing and dicing henchmen. The film doesn’t hold back, as it depicts Old Man Logan stabbing people with his adamantium claws through their skulls, sometimes even in gratifying slow motion too.
Being the first R-rated MCU movie, Deadpool 3 will undoubtedly deliver more of that violence. However, it’ll be even more exciting given that it’ll be through a different, more comedic lens. Logan depicted how nasty coming face-to-face with Wolverine can be, but it’ll no doubt be played off for laughs in the threequel.
Why Stop At Wolverine?
While Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine is exciting, No_MrBond seemingly isn’t satisfied and wants to see more MCU characters in the movie. The Redditor suggests, “Blow people’s minds, sneak in Spider-Man.” While that sounds like a random choice, Spider-Man and Deadpool actually have a lot of history.
Some comic books have explained that Deadpool’s outfit is the Spider-Man costume inside out, and the pair make up the Team Red superhero group that includes Daredevil, which fans want to see in Phase 6. However, it isn’t like audiences haven’t gotten enough Spider-Man, as three Spider-Men showed up in No Way Home, and audiences are getting not one but two Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequels in the next couple of years.
Captain America Should Be Involved Too
Wanting Spider-Man in the movie isn’t the only crossover that Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine has inspired, as Milksteak_Sandwich wants to see Captain America in the film too. The Redditor wants to see Deadpool 3 be based on “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly series with Chris Evans reprising his role as Cap.”
While The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a classic western movie, it also shares its name with a crossover comic book series that see Deadpool, Captain America, and Wolverine all locking horns. But though that might take too much screen time away from Deadpool, the comic book is still very much about Wade, and it’s actually well-written and surprisingly revealing too.
The Announcement Came At A Strange Time
Redditor Attrel3432 notes that the announcement came at a very strange time, as it only follows D23 by a week. Before the event, fans were theorizing over what could possibly be announced, but D23 ended up being a total disappointment for many with very little revealed.
There isn’t a clear reason why Jackman’s return wasn’t announced at the Disney event, and, almost embodying Deadpool, the Redditor comments, “Disney: F*** D23.” However, given that Jackman was clearly done with the character and is a world-famous actor, there were undoubtedly a lot of negotiations before he signed on the dotted line, and it probably wasn’t a done deal until after D23 had wrapped.
It Doesn’t Ruin Logan
While most X-Men and MCU fans are ecstatic about the news, some have criticized the choice to bring back the mutant and that it ruins Logan’s perfect ending. However, Fallenmonk thinks it isn’t a problem whatsoever, noting, “This will most likely be a new interpretation of the character (likely in the classic yellow spandex suit), used in a lighthearted manner. The two can coexist.”
People didn’t have a problem with Professor X’s appearance in Multiverse of Madness, which was essentially no different. However, Wolverine in Deadpool 3 might give some audiences whiplash after seeing him in such a serious and grim movie.
It’ll Just Be A Cameo
Redditor Snoo_72280 thinks the huge announcement, which even came with a couple of lengthy videos featuring Reynolds and Jackman, is leading up to a whole load of nothing. The Redditor posits, “Just wait, it will be a 10-second cameo.” If it was just a cameo, it wouldn’t have been announced two years before the movie’s release date.
However, that would play into Deadpool’s typical humor even if it would disappoint thousands of fans. But it’d be a great homage to Wolverine’s 10-second cameo in X-Men: First Class when he tells Charles and Erick, “F*** off.” And it’d be even funnier (or more heartbreaking) if Jackman was relegated to just a post-credits scene.
It’ll Be A Box Office Hit
User Futz-Around bets on the movie’s box office, stating, “Calling it now, easily going to pass 1 billion.” There’s no denying that Deadpool 3 will be a smash hit, as not only is it a threequel to two movies that have made a combined $1.5 billion (via Box Office Mojo), but it sees Jackman returning as Wolverine and will be part of the MCU.
However, though Jackman’s return will no doubt help the film’s box office performance, the movie likely would have made over a billion dollars with or without him. The Deadpool series was already on its way to that box office landmark, and no X-Men or Wolverine movie has come close to beating the Deadpool movies’ box office success.
