Adventure games have gone through peaks and troughs in popularity, with a lot of big-name developers turning much of their attention toward first-person shooters throughout the 2000s and 2010s due to the rise in popularity thanks to games like Call of Duty and Halo. However, there has been a resurgence in adventure games, particularly on the Playstation 5. Sony has been a leading light in allowing third-party game developers to launch video games on their platform, which has ushered in the resurgence of many overlooked game genres, from racing to sports and more, and especially adventure games.

An adventure game is one where you play a role of a protagonist, usually adventuring around and solving puzzles that are narrative-driven. The nature of designing an adventure game tends to mean that they are largely single-player; however, multiplayer adventure games also exist, and we have included some in our list of 10 best PS5 adventure games.

If you have been looking for a video game that focuses on interesting stories, requires particular problem-solving, or is a sequel of a well-loved franchise, there will be something on this list that appeals to you. So let’s take a look at the 10 best adventure games for PS5.

Now you may think of Sonic the Hedgehog as a pretty linear platform game, but the newest installment in the Sonic universe, Sonic Frontiers, incorporates open-world and adventure elements that have breathed new life into Sonic the Hedgehog. It is the series’ first open-world video game, and you can complete different challenges, access Cyber Space, and fight robotic enemies.

Like Sonic games of times gone by, the nefarious Doctor Eggman is up to his usual conniving tricks which draws the attention of Sonic, Tails, and Amy who set about investigating the unusual activity on the abandoned Starfall Islands. When Sonic’s friends are dragged into Cyberspace, the plucky hedgehog has to set about destroying different robotic defense units that have been summoned to the islands.

Although this game has the usual exciting Sonic gameplay, the thing that stands out for us is the amazing soundtrack that accompanies the game which was worked on by numerous different Japanese artists. The lead composer for Frontiers was Tomoya Ohtani, a Japanese composer who has worked on over 35 other video games including Sonic Lost World and Super Smash Bros. The music accompanies the game and helps create a mysterious atmosphere that really suits exploring. If you’re looking for a fun adventure game that evokes nostalgia with some new features then this is a great option.

Santa Monica Studios are back with the 9th installment in the God of War series, God of War Ragnarök. Released on the 9th of November it is the first cross-gen release in the God of War series and let us tell you, it has not disappointed. Ragnarök is the concluding game in the Norse Series, which started with A Call from The Wilds followed by the self-titled God of War.

The game follows main protagonist Kratos who is accompanied by his son Arteus as they adventure through ancient Scandinavia visiting the nine different realms that is present in Norse mythology. The storyline takes the player through each of the 9 different realms, unlike the previous game where only 6 realms could be played through. The storyline is based upon the event of Ragnarök, which in Norse mythology is a series of different events which eventually leave the world in ruin after being submerged in water. Players of the previous game, God of War, will remember that this prophecy was foretold by Kratos after he killed Baldur.

The gameplay follows the previous game rather closely and is still a third-person game style with combo-based combat. Like all great adventure games, there are plenty of puzzles to solve along the way as well as dramatic battles that pit the protagonist against different mythological Norse foes such as elves and giants. This story is set up by the previous God of War game, so playing that before will be more beneficial in understanding the full picture, but it is not totally necessary if you are quick at picking up storylines.

  • Single-player only
  • 4K resolution at 30 FPS
  • DualSense integration
  • Fully optimised for 3D audio

A Plague Tale 1

Amicia and Hugo run through a battlefield.

See on Amazon

Adventure games don’t always have to be in colorful worlds with pretty landscapes and breathtaking imagery, they can be dirty, grimy, and outright scary. A Plague Tale proves just that. It is a dark and gloomy third-person adventure where the player has to survive France during a devastating plague that has wiped out many people. The plague in question is the Black Plague as the game is set in 14th-century medieval France, you play as main protagonist Amicia de Rune and have to survive with her little brother Hugo, avoiding hordes of plague-infested rats and French Inquisition soldiers.

This is a stealth game, so don’t expect the gameplay to be all guns blazing whilst jumping into battles against soldiers. The idea is to use a combination of different tactics and limited tools, so you can stealthily sneak past, distract, evade or knock out the enemy in-front of you. There are puzzles to be solved if you are to get Hugo to safety, which do require a bit of brain power to conquer.

A Plague Tale was originally released in 2019 and developed by Asobo Studio, so it has been carefully remastered to the standard of next-generation consoles and although grimy and bleak, the world is captivating and beautiful at times. Asobo Studios hired acclaimed French composer Olivier Deriviere to create an atmospheric soundtrack that intensifies the gameplay. Deriviere has worked on other horror adventure games such as Alone in the Dark and Remember Me and his work really helps to make A Plague Tale completely captivating.

Key Features

  • Game score composed by Olivier Deriviere
  • Third-person gameplay
  • A horror, stealth adventure game
  • Takes advantage of Haptic Feedback on controller
Specifications

  • Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
  • Genre: Action-adventure, stealth

  • The storyline and character development is very well presented and told
  • Unique storylines throughout

  • The game is a little short

Vikings have always enraptured the imagination of storytellers, authors, and movie makers, but there hasn’t been a Viking game as good as Assassin’s Creed’s Valhalla. Set in England during the Dark Ages you will play as Eivor who is supposed to be a fierce Viking Warrior that ain’t going to be defeated by anyone but this is only dependent on how well you play and grow certain skills.

This is an Assassin’s Creed game, so expect customization options and exciting combat that allows you to dual-wield weapons and launch massive assaults this time against Saxon troops and fortresses. Although Eivor’s main task is to establish a Viking clan within England, there is also the old conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order tying it quite nicely to previous Assassin’s Creed games. As we have also come to expect, there are a lot of enjoyable puzzles and side quests that will keep you entertained for hours if you don’t want to follow the main narrative. The player can do quests and activities like building their very own town from the ground up and raiding other settlements around England. For an adventure game, there is a lot of autonomy you have, and you can really play the game how you want to, and the Dark Ages in England has never looked better in 4K HD.

Key Features

  • A huge world to explore in, open world roaming
  • Advanced RPG mechanics
  • Ninth century, dark ages storyline
  • Stunning visuals

Ghost of Tsushima is a stunning action-adventure game that everyone needs to play. It is a wonderfully vast, expansive terrain that sees the player play as the troubled Samurai, Jin Sakai. Jin’s ultimate goal is to protect Tsushima Island as the Mongol’s are invading during their first invasion of Japan. Jin is awfully troubled as he has to choose between honoring the ancient warrior Samurai code or using frowned-upon methods that are practical but dishonorable.

Whilst exploring the island you will come across many different friends and enemies. If it is an enemy, you will have two options; either face off with your sharp Katana or take them out with a stealth mode attack and become ‘the ghost’. This part of the game is quite reminiscent of Farcry and is really enjoyable.

In October 2020, developers released a multiplayer mode on the game, so you can now play with friends in two-player or four-player co-operative mode. If you enjoy playing your adventure games online then Ghost of Tsushima will be a good option for you. Perhaps a slight criticism of the game is the number of cut scenes, although it is marketed as an open-world action-adventure the narrative is quite structured, and you will encounter quite a lot of cut scenes. However, the scenery alone is worth the purchase.

Key Features

  • Dynamic 4K resolution and 60fps
  • Open-world roaming
  • Multiplayer options available
  • Near instant load times
Specifications

  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Genre: Action-adventure
  • Mode: Single-player, multiplayer
  • Platform: Playstation 5

Pros

  • The world you explore is beautiful
  • The combat is exciting, but stealth mode options are a nice touch
  • An element of education as stories are based on true events
Cons

  • The open world is quite restrictive due to narrative

Kena- Bridge of Spirits 1

Kena- Bridge of Spirits 2

See on Amazon

Kena: Bridge of spies follows protagonist Kena, who is a likable spirit guide trying to help deceased souls traverse from the physical world to the spirit world. The physical world is split up into different zones which you adventure through, only when you amount enough collectibles and defeat the zone boss will the game allow you to progress to the next zone. Quite a simple, linear game style which is similar to the 3D third-person adventure usually found in a Zelda. Each zone is home to a corrupt spirit which Kena has to free, along the way you meet characters who are familiar with the corrupt spirit and learn their history and storyline. It is quite formulaic, but it keeps your attention and is interesting nonetheless. Where the game really shines is the animation. It is a visual experience, and you feel like you are playing through an animated movie, which is not surprising considering the developer, Ember Lab, is an animation and digital content studio. The characters look fantastic, and their facial expressions are eerily realistic. Kena looks absolutely extraordinary throughout the entire game and this realism makes you really engrossed in her journey. This is Ember Lab’s first video game, and they have knocked it out of the park. The use of different lighting is beautiful, whether that be from the sunlight when you are journeying through the land or in a dimly lit cave that is lit up by the bioluminescent light emitting from Kena’s powers, it is a sight to behold. The combat mechanics are quite simple but deceptively tricky. There are only three options when fighting: light attack, strong attack, and using your bow to shoot arrows, which is a little disappointing considering the thought that has gone into the animated world and the clever ways you can explore the map. However, the enemies that you come up against usually take a few attempts to defeat, so don’t let the simplicity fool you. Overall, this is an awesome first attempt by an independent studio, hopefully there is more to come.

Key Features

  • Single-player mode only
  • Created by an independent third-party publisher
  • Enjoyable fast paced combat
  • Third-person perspective
Specifications

  • Publisher: Ember Lab
  • Genre: Action-Adventure
  • Mode: Single-player
  • Platform: Playstation 5
  • Rating: Teen-Adolescent
Pros

  • The world Kena explores is visually stunning
  • Intuitive controls and easy enough to grasp
  • Very cute side characters that will make you laugh
Cons

  • Defeating the bosses can be quite difficult for younger gamers

For those who enjoy the more fast-paced and violent adventure games, boy do we have the right one for you. Existing as a standalone sequel to the original Alien trilogy, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is set 23 years after the final Alien film. In Aliens: Fireteam Elite you play as a Colonial Marine onboard the UAS Endeavour whose task it is to respond to a distress call that has been sent from the Katanga refinery station that is situated in the outer colonies.

Being an Alien game you can expect that this distress call has been sent out for a good reason and there are over 20 different enemy types that you will face in total. Each different enemy has their own specific strengths, and you have to pay attention to what type you are facing. This variety of enemies coming at you from all angles has drawn comparisons to the Left 4 Dead series. To better survive the numerous enemies, you can select to play between five different classes who also have their own special abilities and traits.

The gameplay features four-story campaigns, each contacting three different missions of which you are accompanied by two different allies. If you have someone you enjoy gaming with, a second player can pay as one of these allies, making this one of the few multiplayer games on our list. This is a high-paced, gory game and if you are a fan of the Alien franchise then this is a must-have!

If the best thing about adventure games is the storytelling, then you would find it hard to play a better example than Uncharted. The Uncharted saga has been around since 2007 and has spanned across numerous different consoles, first originating on the Playstation 3 with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Uncharted 4 is arguably the most critically and generally acclaimed game in the series thanks to the cinematic storytelling and high-octane combat.

In this Legacy of Thieves collection, you are getting two fully remastered games from Uncharted 4; A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy which have been wonderfully remastered to bring it up to the standard of the Playstation 5. Visuals and frame rates have been improved by independent developers, Naughty Dog, so the game’s fidelity and response are really quick and sharp. Both games have also been remastered, so you can play with the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The best part of any Uncharted game is the dialogue between the characters and the storytelling; it is really immersive, and it feels like you are playing through a blockbuster movie. There are plenty of laughs along the way, and you are bound to enjoy the narrative as you explore the expansive world. This is a great deal as you are essentially getting two fantastic adventure games for the price of one. Although the cinematic storytelling is right up our streets we can understand why the long stories may not be appealing to some gamers out there who enjoy things a little more fast-paced.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a spinoff of the much-loved LittleBigPlanet series and focuses on the protagonist, Sackboy. Sackboy’s universe is in danger as evil villain Vex, Richard E. Grant, rips through the sky and descends on the village of Loom sucking up everything in his path to enslave the Sackfolk and to pillage resources, so he can build the Topsy-Turver machine. A machine that has the capability of taking over the whole world. So it is Sackboy’s job to stop Vex before the evil villain can do just that, no pressure right? Regardless of the high stakes, this is a really enjoyable game with many creative game mechanics to keep it a highly entertaining game. The developers, Sumo Sheffield, have created an intricately detailed game that is a pleasure to play. There is an incredible depth of field throughout the different areas and the variety of the different locations is both amusing and creative. Seeing the different materials up close and personal will leave you in awe and the detail is so lifelike. Unlike LittleBigPlanet, which was created in 2.5D, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is portrayed in full 3D and the freedom this allows for movement is unique. However, the constantly changing perspective of the 3D platforms can be a little tricky to follow, and it can take a bit of time to get used to. This goes for the villains, too, judging where they are going to come from or launch an attack can be deceptively tricky. If you can get past that, then Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a lovely game that can be completed between six and ten hours.
