“That’s Straight Out Of ‘68”: Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Original Movie Callbacks Teased By Star

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes star Owen Teague touches on the film’s relationship with the original movie. Set hundreds of years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is an upcoming sequel that follows an ape society as a new dictator comes to power. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set for release on May 10 and features a leading cast including Teague, Freya Allen, Dichen Lachman, Kevin Durand, and William H. Macy.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Teague teases the relationship between Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the original film. Teague says that the connection between the sequel and 1968’s Planet of the Apes is evident even in the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer. This includes a “scene where there’s a bunch of humans, and the apes with the lasso are chasing them,” a “human hunt scene,” and “design elements,” all of which pay homage to the original film. Check out the full quote from Teague below:

I mean, people see it in the trailer. It’s out right now. That scene where there’s a bunch of humans, and the apes with the lasso are chasing them. That’s straight out of ’68, which is really cool because now we get to see that great human hunt scene from the original done with what we have the capacity to do today. So, that’s really neat.

There are a few [more] Easter eggs, but I won’t give them away. They’re not major plot points, but just little set pieces or design elements of the architecture that we see people who’ve seen the original will go, “Hey, there’s that thing from ’68.” They have not a big deal to do the story. but there’s little hits every now and again, which is cool.

Why This Choice Makes Sense for Planet of the Apes

From Teague’s description, it sounds like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will play frequent homage to its predecessors without being a direct copy. These “little hints” will hopefully connect the film more directly to the rest of the series, as Planet of the Apes content has now been in production for over half a century. Teague also makes a good point about the ability to render scenes that were interesting conceptually in 1968 using modern technology, which can also create an updated spin on existing content.

The way in which callbacks function in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes makes sense based on existing elements of the film. While this movie is technically supposed to be a sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ jump forward in time makes it such that none of the characters in the new film knew the characters in War for the Planet of the Apes. Still, the upcoming film will include direct hints to its 21st-century predecessors, including naming its major villain Proximus Caesar.

The modern Planet of the Apes franchise re-imagines many elements of the original series, and makes some big changes to them.

Thus, it seems that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will fill the gap in time by making an active effort towards homage. This approach will make the film feel more connected to the series while still exploring its own entirely independent story from the original films. Hopefully, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will balance these elements successfully as it prepares for release this spring.
