“That’s Just Another Season”: Big Bang Theory’s Raj Actor Comments On Potential Spinoff Return

The Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar, who played Raj Koothrappali, shares his candid opinion about a potential spinoff. Back in April 2023, it was announced the universe of Big Bang Theory would continue with a planned spinoff for the Max streaming service. The new show would be from Chuck Lorre, the executive producer and creator of The Big Bang Theory. There have been no plot details regarding the project so far, with Lorre recently expressing doubt that the project would move forward at all.

In comments to TVLine, Nayyar was open regarding his mixed feelings towards The Big Bang Theory spinoff. The actor suggested that it could have been too soon to revisit the sitcom, given that it has only been off the air since 2019. Still, in the quote below, Nayyar adds that he’d be open to reprising his role if the right circumstances align. The quote is below:

To be honest, it feels a little too soon. Can you do a [revival] only four years after your show ends? That’s not a reunion show; that’s just another season.

If [the spinoff] were to happen, we’ll see what the universe says.

Is The Big Bang Theory Spinoff Still Happening?

There have been contradictory updates on the status of the Big Bang Theory spinoff. At one point, it was reported that Lorre approached Max executives with an original idea set in the same overall world as The Big Bang Theory. But since then, Lorre has cast doubt on the spinoff happening at all. The creator and executive producer has cautioned that the project is still in its early stages and that it may be scrapped altogether if the idea is not worthwhile.

There will be one Big Bang Theory spinoff that’s poised to move forward. It’s been reported that a multi-cam comedy Young Sheldon spinoff is in the works at CBS. The new project, hailing from Lorre and executive producers Steve Holland and Steven Molaro, will focus on the characters of Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister. They’re portrayed, respectively, by Montana Jordan and Emily Osment. Although deals with Jordan and Osment are reportedly still being finalized, the spinoff is currently set for the 2024-25 broadcast season. It’s not known whether the CBS show will impact The Big Bang Theory spinoff.

Young Sheldon’s new spinoff will only focus on Georgie and Mandy’s story, but The Big Bang Theory’s established canon says that it isn’t possible.

Nayyar, who was promoting his Night Court reunion with fellow Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch, joins Lorre in his trepidation about reviving the series. At this time, it sounds like the spinoff will only happen if the idea develops into something that could maintain a franchise that has been a consistent success.
