That ‘70s Show: Everyone Who Wore The “Stupid Helmet” (& Why)

The “stupid helmet” was one of the most amusing elements from That ’70s Show during the Fox sitcom’s history. The series was created by Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner, and Mark Brazill and ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. Not only was the period sitcom a hit with viewers, but it was also credited for launching the careers of actors like Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Topher Grace.

The stupid helmet from That ’70s Show was an old Green Bay Packers football helmet that resided in Eric Forman’s (Grace) basement. It was often seen in the background but it eventually became the topic of a long-running gag. A character was forced to wear the helmet by other members of the group when they did or said something incredibly stupid. The thought behind the helmet was to protect the few remaining brain cells that the person had left.

Since the series primarily focused on a group of teens and young adults from the ’70s, the stupid helmet made several appearances. Eric was one of the core characters to wear the replica helmet in the series. His guy friends forced him to wear it after he considered proposing to Donna (Laura Prepon), something the rest of the gang thought was a horrible idea. At one point, Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) helped Kelso (Kutcher) win back Jackie (Kunis). After they did get back together, Fez realized what he had done and put on the helmet to bang his head against a table repeatedly. Of course, the person who had the most experience with the stupid helmet was Michael Kelso.

Kelso Wore The Stupid Helmet The Most In That ’70s Show

Kelso could have laid claim on the Green Bay Packers helmet for the number of times it sat on his head. Over the course of the series, Kelso wore it a handful of times, but it was insinuated that he had a long history with the helmet during his life. One of the most memorable occasions was when he decided to paddle down the side of a mountain in a canoe in season 6. He refused to wear the helmet for that instance but later in the episode, he put it on as he rode in the canoe while Hyde (Danny Masterson) towed him with a car.

Kelso was absent for most of That ’70s Show season 8 since Kutcher exited the series. He returned in the series finale episode, which took place on New Year’s Eve in 1979. After the gang reunited for one last “circle,” they proclaimed the last person up the stairs had to call Red a “dumbass.” Kelso was last, so before stomping up the steps, he hilariously grabbed the helmet one last time. When That ’70s Show ended its run, Kutcher took home the stupid helmet as a souvenir which viewers found very fitting.
