That ’70s Show: 20 Things Wrong With Michael Kelso We All Choose To Ignore

The 1970s were a much simpler time.  The ’70s were all about peace, love and rock and roll. In fact, teens spent their days grooving out to good music. On the other hand, That ’70s Show taught us that they weren’t that different from us. The gang of friends is like any other group. There’s always an Eric, Donna, and Hyde. As a matter of fact, everyone also has a Michael Kelso in their group. If you don’t know who it is, it might be you. Indeed, Kelso has a number of flaws his friends over look.

Without a doubt, Kelso was the breakout star of That ’70s Show. The show depicted the life of teenagers living in the 1970s. They struggle with school, love and each other. Kelso was the good-looking, dim-witted goof ball of the gang. He wasn’t the smartest guy in the world. In fact, Red had a special nickname for guys like him. However, he did manage to score some high grades. Regardless, his strongest subject was women. All the women wanted him and the guys wanted to be him. Well, Fez wanted to be just like him.

At the same time, Kelso wasn’t always a good friend. In addition, his good looks and female attention often went to his head. He also loves to pull pranks and sometimes they hurt. He can be a bad friend but he’s an even worse boyfriend. As a matter of fact, he’s not very good in relationships. He broke many hearts in the show and didn’t seem to care. Kelso became a popular star but he’s not perfect. It’s time to take a closer look at the ’70s and Kelso.

Here are 20 Things Wrong With Michael Kelso We All Choose To Ignore.

That ’70s Show: 20 Things Wrong With Michael Kelso We All Choose To Ignore

There are two things that Kelso love to do the most. Firstly, he loves to hang out in Eric’s basement in The Circle. Secondly, he loves women and can’t stop from flirting. Actually, Kelso also loves to play with dogs so there are three things. Regardless, he’s got a weakness for women. In particular, he loves to flirt with his friend’s moms.

He constantly makes remarks towards Donna’s mother Midge and Jackie’s mother Pam. In fact, he literally ran to see Pam when he saw her long flowing hair from a distance. However, nobody gets him going like Eric’s mom Kitty. He even tells Eric that his mother’s one of the hottest. In other words, keep your daughters and mothers away from Kelso.

KELSO AND CASEY PULL MEAN PRANKS ON EACH OTHER

Luke Wilson and Ashton Kutcher on That '70s Show

It’s common for siblings to have a bit of a feud. In fact, the best siblings often pull pranks on the other. However, Kelso and his brother Casey went a bit far with it. Well, when it comes to pranks Kelso always goes too far. Kelso comes from a very large family but we only meet his one brother.

Casey loves to torture his little brother with pranks. Of course, some pranks physically hurt and others are embarrassing. Regardless, it’s always worth it. To be fair, Kelso finds ways to get him back. His response is usually mean and awful. For instance, he once spat in each of Casey’s socks. At the same time, Kelso loves to prank the gang as well.

HE BRAGS ABOUT HIS GOOD LOOKS

Kelso and Jackie in That 70s Show

Clearly, Kelso is the handsome one of the gang. Of course, he’s aware of his good looks and makes sure everyone else is too. He knows he’s good-looking and loves to brag about it. He’s not humble and probably doesn’t want to be. He’s happy being the arrogant handsome guy.

To be fair, he does admit he’s not the only beautiful one. He often gives credit to Jackie and Donna. However, he enjoys putting his “less attractive” friends down. In fact, he’s in a state of complete surprise when a girl picks Fez over him. He can’t wrap his head around the fact she didn’t pick him. He feels there must be some mistake because he’s just so good looking.

HE THROWS A HUGE PARTY AT JACKIE’S AND STARTS A FIRE

Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso and Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart in That '70s Show

For most of the show, Kelso dates Jackie Burkhart. It’s a pretty intense on-again/off-again romance. However, Kelso didn’t always take her feelings into account. In season 2, Jackie decides to throw a sophisticated dinner party. Of course, Kelso wants to throw a wild party and invites the whole school.

Jackie just wanted to invite her close friends. That meant no Hyde or Fez but Kelso invites them anyway. He doesn’t seem to care when Jackie runs off crying. Instead, he stays at the party and lights a cigar. He ends up starting a fire and nearly burns her house down. Clearly, he isn’t very good at being a boyfriend.

HE TRIES TO GET OUT OF BEING A FATHER

Shannon Elizabeth as Brooke on That '70s Show

In season 6, Kelso finds himself in a perplexing situation. He had a passionate moment with Brooke at a concert. However, she denies having the encounter with Kelso. He then goes out of his way to prove he’s telling the truth. His friends don’t believe him until Brooke finally admits it. Of course, she also tells Kelso she’s pregnant with his child. He then denies the encounter he had with her.

As a matter of fact, he attempts to get out of being a father. He tries to avoid the responsibility as much as he can. At first, he’s even happy when she doesn’t want him to be part of the baby’s life.

HE OFTEN THROWS ERIC UNDER THE BUS TO SAVE HIMSELF

Kelso and Eric Foreman in That 70s Show

Kelso, Hyde, Fez, and Eric are the best of friends. Like all friends, they’re always there for each other. Also, like all friends they love to see each other get in trouble. Indeed, Kelso truly took enjoyment in throwing his friends under the bus. In season 4, the gang throws Hyde a birthday party.

Eric, Donna, and Kelso decide to get him the perfect gift. They attempt to take down a High Street sign. It’s an actual street sign so they need a saw to cut it down. Of course, Red catches Kelso looking for his saw. Kelso then comes up with a bizarre story about a rabbit stuck in a tree. He then claims that Eric threw the rabbit up the tree. He has no problem selling out Eric even when it’s not necessary.

HE LIKES WHEN HIS GIRLFRIENDS CONTROL HIM

Kelso seems like the type of guy that can’t be with one woman the rest of his life. However, he does have a few serious girlfriends in the show. His girlfriends are often demanding and controlling. They boss him around and tell him what to do. A guy like Hyde has a tough time with this.

On the other hand, a guy like Kelso loves it. In fact, when dating Annette he remarks how nice it’s to be under someone’s thumb again. Despite his unfaithful ways he likes controlling women. He doesn’t mind the yelling in public or bossing around. Indeed, he has no problems not wearing the pants in the relationship.

HE TAKES HIS FRIENDS OUT FOR DINNER BUT LEAVES THEM TO PAY THE BILL

In season 3, Kelso flatters his grandma and gets $100. He decides to take the whole gang out for dinner on him. He takes them to a fancy restaurant and has a feast. When the check comes he reveals his plan is to dine and dash. He never planned on paying for the bill. The gang’s against the idea so he just runs out. He leaves them with the bill to pay.

In addition, he steals Eric’s car in the process of leaving them. Kelso thinks his actions are funny and has a good laugh about it. In the end, Eric and Donna get him back by tricking him into eating ex-lax brownies.

HE LIES ABOUT HIS AGE

Kelso Michael and Fez on That 70s Show

For the first few seasons, the gang struggles to buy substances due to being underage. In several episodes, they go to great lengths to buy beverages but always fail. However, the gang later discovers a  secret about Kelso that changes everything. Turns out Kelso’s not the same age as the rest.

He’s been lying about his age since he knew the gang. In fact, he failed the first grade and had to repeat it. He admits it’s because of cursive writing and the accidental death of the class bunny. Regardless, that makes him the oldest in the group but he hid his secret. Hyde’s furious when he realizes Kelso’s a year older. That means he could have purchased beverages for the gang had he told the truth.

HE USES ANNETTE TO MAKE JACKIE JEALOUS

In season 5, Kelso returns from California to find out that Jackie’s dating Hyde. The entire gang’s pretty shocked and a bit disgusted. Regardless, Hyde and Jackie aren’t just a short-term fling. Kelso’s filled with jealousy and tries to break them up. When that doesn’t work he tries to make Jackie jealous.

Kelso flies in Annette who he met in California. He brings her out with the sole purpose of making Jackie jealous. Kelso doesn’t seem to really like her. He certainly finds her attractive but he wants to be with Jackie. He’s just using her to make Jackie jealous. In fact, she realizes this and ends up leaving him.

HE’S CONSTANTLY HITTING ON DONNA

Eric and Donna’s romance was central to the show. Their love story went on for the entire series. Eric and Donna were madly in love. Regardless, Kelso constantly hit on Donna even when she was dating Eric. In fact, he would hit on Donna in front of Eric. He also hit on her when they broke up.

That doesn’t seem like something a friend would do. He doesn’t care that they have a complicated relationship. Clearly, Eric doesn’t like the comments but Kelso doesn’t care. In those times, he’s a pretty bad friend to Eric. Donna’s hurt him many times and Kelso just adds to it. She’s the love of Eric’s life but Kelso doesn’t seem to care.

HE’S An awful POLICE OFFICER

In season 6, Kelso decides to become a police officer. It’s the first time he’s serious about a job that’s not a male model. However, being an officer proves to be difficult. In fact, Kelso’s a terrible police officer from the start. He barely passes any of his classes and often messes up. To be fair, he tries to take it seriously but Hyde and Fez make that tough.

Later, he takes a police vehicle without permission and leaves the keys in. Of course, Hyde and Fez steal the car. In addition, he burnt down the police academy by accidentally setting off a flare. He then set off a second one as a warning for the first.

HE’S SOMEWHAT SMART BUT RELIES ON HIS LOOKS

As noted, Kelso’s very aware of his good looks and charm. He often uses them to his advantage although it doesn’t always work out. Kelso appears to be a doofus that isn’t very bright. Turns out he’s smarter than he lets on. In fact, he scored very high on the SAT’s and even did better than Eric. Regardless, he relies on his looks, not his brains.

He chooses to focus on having fun over a career. A flashback reveals that he was once a promising student. Then Hyde introduced him to The Circle and it all went downhill. He’s sad when he discovers that can’t rely on his looks forever.

HE MADE FUN OF FEZ

Kelso and Fez had a special friendship. They were closest to each other and had quite the bromance. Fez came from a foreign country and struggled to fit in. Luckily, Kelso’s there to lie to him and make fun of him. Despite being good friends Kelso loves to prank Fez. Kelso loves to give him misinformation and watch as he embarrasses himself.

To be fair, Hyde and Eric love to do that too. However, Kelso is sometimes cruel to his good buddy. In fact, Fez looks up to Kelso and all he gets in return his mockery. The gang often teases Fez for his unique accent. Nobody has more fun at the expense of Fez than Kelso.

HE FOUGHT HYDE FOR JACKIE AFTER LEAVING HER

In season 5, Kelso and Hyde fight over Jackie. Hyde and Jackie start dating and Kelso doesn’t like it. He promises to do whatever it takes to get her back. He competes with Hyde for Jackie in every situation he can. However, Kelso had many chances to be with her.

He screwed up each chance before Jackie and Hyde started dating. In fact, he ran off to California to avoid marrying her. He even moves on with someone else. Kelso had many chances to be with Jackie. Instead, he was chasing after other girls. It seems he really wants her when she’s with someone else. Later, he claims to move on but Hyde catches them together.

HE RAN OFF TO CALIFORNIA WHEN JACKIE WANTED TO MARRY HIM

Throughout season 4, Jackie put Kelso through a series of tests. They broke up but Kelso wanted her back. For the most part, he failed all the tests she put him through. Finally, she considers taking him back but wants to marry him. Kelso freaks out and runs off to California.

Luckily, Donna was also running off to California. Like always he left Jackie alone and with a broken heart. In addition, he moves on pretty quickly with Annette. Later, he’s jealous that Jackie starts dating Hyde. He doesn’t really have a right to be angry. He’s the one that left her. He should be happy he’s not the one she wants to marry now.

HE PUBLICLY MOCKS ERIC

Donna and Eric were polar opposites of Jackie and Kelso. Eric and Donna took things real slow. They didn’t rush into anything. In fact, their first time together wasn’t until season 2. Of course, their first time isn’t what they thought it would be.

However, Donna decides to tell Jackie it wasn’t that good. Kelso ends up finding out and chooses to be a bad friend about it. In fact, he publicly makes fun of Eric in front of their friends. He gleefully tells everyone about how bad Eric was. This ends up messing with Eric’s head and confidence. That’s not something a good friend would do.

HIS PRANKS OFTEN GO TOO FAR

There’s one thing Kelso loves more than women, hanging out in The Circle or dogs. He loves to pull pranks on his friends. The more embarrassing and painful the better. He even goes as far as creating Prank Day. His pranks are rarely harmless and usually cause pain.

To make matters worse, it’s nearly impossible to get him back. Kelso truly is the prank king. Even when the other guys team up with Red it doesn’t work. It’s just unfortunate that his pranks are sometimes mean. In particular, his pranks aimed at Fez are pretty mean. To be fair, the other three love to pull mean pranks too.

HE DATED TWO OF HIS FRIEND’S SISTERS

Megalyn Echikunwoke from CW and DC's Vixen as Angie on That '70s Show

As noted, Kelso can sometimes be a pretty bad friend. When it comes to women he doesn’t care who they are. In fact, he dated two of his friends’ sisters. First, he famously dated Eric’s sister Laurie. They had quite the fling, which was while he dated Jackie. Later, they become an actual couple until she leaves.

He openly talked about Laurie in front of Eric. In fact, he had fun torturing Eric with that news. In addition, it gave more ammo for Eric’s friends. Later, Kelso starts dating Hyde’s half-sister Angie. Again, he doesn’t care that it’s his friend’s sister. He also doesn’t care that it makes them feel uncomfortable.

KELSO is awful to jackie

For the first few seasons, Kelso and Jackie’s romance played a big part in the show. However, Kelso was awful to her. He could have treated her a lot better. Mainly, he was unfaithful to Jackie for most of their relationship. In fact, he kissed Pam Macy behind the school gym while dating Jackie. Not only did he kiss another girl but he did it in the open.

He even bragged to his friends. Later, he’s unfaithful when he starts seeing Laurie. He’s very open with Laurie and doesn’t care about Jackie. He rarely took her feelings into account. Indeed, he even buys a van to meet other women. He could have tried to be a much better boyfriend.
