Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot comes complete with a post-credits scene—one that seems to be setting up a possible sequel. It’s no secret that the timeline of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is one of the most tangled in movie history. Most of the entries are so loosely connected that they might as well be reboots. As it is, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 is the third direct sequel to director Tobe Hooper’s original 1974 classic, and the second to erase all prior sequels and follow-ups that came before it.
So far, the response to Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre appears mixed. On one hand, Leatherface is at arguably his most fearsome since the original movie, and gets the most use out of his titular chainsaw that he ever has onscreen. On the other, most of the characters are little more than kill fodder, and the actual plot echoes hundreds of other generic slasher flicks. At a scant 83 minutes though, a running time it shares with the original, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 provides some fun, and doesn’t overstay its welcome.
It makes sense that those who enjoyed the gory romp that is Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 are hoping to see Leatherface return to Netflix and claim more victims in a sequel. For its part, the reboot’s post-credits scene seems to be setting a sequel up. The scene sees Leatherface, fresh off decapitating Melody, headed down the dirt road to the old farmhouse that he and his makeshift cannibal family called home back in 1974. After decades of dormancy at the orphanage in Harlow, Leatherface is back in the family business.
When Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 begins, the man known as Leatherface was seemingly living a quiet life with Ginny, the woman who had taken him in sometime after the infamous 1974 massacre. What happened to the rest of the Sawyer clan is unclear, but as improbable as it might seem, Leatherface looks to have hung up his trademark weapon for nearly 50 years. After all, it was hidden inside a wall in Ginny’s room. It wasn’t until Dante, Melody, Lila, and Ruth forced Ginny out of her home, causing her to have a heart attack, that Leatherface once again resumed his old killing ways.
With his only “family” now gone, and Ginny avenged, Leatherface is a man without a mission. Judging by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre post-credits scene, that’s sent Leatherface back into the mindset of 1974. He’s going to return to his old home and probably keep to himself; that is unless anyone makes the grave mistake of stepping foot onto his land, or worse, has taken possession of it in the decades since. Considering that Lila is still alive, and may well come back with the authorities, it seems likely that the film’s post-credits scene is setting up Leatherface’s return in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
