Don’t pack your bags for a trip back to Wisteria Lane; Teri Hatcher says Desperate Housewives definitely isn’t coming back via a revival season.
ABC’s soapy melodrama ran for eight seasons from 2004 and 2012 and became a huge hit in the mid-noughties, thanks to its OTT acting and all-star cast. Focusing on four bored housewives in the wake of their best friend’s suicide, Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, and Felicity Huffman took the leading roles. Alongside them were famous faces like Nicolette Sheridan, Vanessa Williams, and Brenda Strong, though the show wasn’t known for keeping the cast alive for very long. When 2012’s season finale wrapped, a cliffhanger ending teased a possible continuation of the story, but Hatcher is here to dash our hopes of a Desperate Housewives reunion.

Speaking to UK panel show Loose Woman (via Digital Spy), Hatcher shot down the idea of revivals despite the chance of the main ladies returning to Desperate Housewives:
“I don’t think they’re very good. Just because of the creators. It’s not the women. I think the women would probably all do it. I’d be the first person. I never wanted it to be over. I love those characters.”
Hatcher once championed the idea of a movie as a “reward” to fans, but it looks like we’ve left the ladies behind for good at this point. Despite surviving the Writers Strike and a jump the shark moment when it skipped five years into the future, Desperate Housewives struggled in its later years. With the announcement that season 8 would be its last, creator Marc Cherry neatly tied their lives up in a bow and sent the women off on their own paths with a happy(ish) look into the future. Although some die-hard fans would love to take a stroll down the lane again, it doesn’t look like it’s meant to be.
Even in this era of remakes and reboots like The Office, Charmed, and Will & Grace, Desperate Housewives‘ definitive ending would make it hard to come back. Also, while the show itself was packed with troublesome storyline and catfights, the ladies themselves weren’t known for keeping it civil behind-the-scenes. As well as Sheridan’s public fighting with Cherry – which led to her character being killed off – the rest of the cast were reportedly particularly unimpressed with Hatcher’s diva antics. In a similar case to the Sarah Jessica Parker/Kim Cattrall feud of Sex and the City, a Desperate Housewives revival would be hard to get off the ground for related reasons.
With Cherry also having helmed spin-off Devious Maids for four seasons, he has no shortage of ideas on how to bring powerful women to our screens. Even if Hatcher and co. aren’t ready to return, who’s to say another batch of fierce women couldn’t move into the lane and kickstart a new season of murder mysteries and affairs? However, with Desperate Housewives having left behind something of a legacy – and surpassing Charmed as the longest running hour-long television series featuring all female leads by two just episodes – maybe it is better to just leave Wisteria Lane where it is… for now.
