Teen Titans’ Newly Revealed Mission Statement Confirms Why They’re DC’s #1 Team

Warning: Spoilers for DC’s Spring Breakout! #1!

The mission statement of the Teen Titans has finally been made clear. The Teen Titans originally came together under the pretense of being former sidekicks who wanted to make a name for themselves. Now that they have successfully remodeled themselves past being viewed as sidekicks, it’s become harder to define what the adult Titans represent now.

The Teen Titans’ overall purpose as a unit becomes much clearer thanks to the team’s appearance in the story “Relay for Your Life” by Meghan Fitzmartin and Gavin Guidry from DC’s Spring Breakout! #1. During a trip to the beach, Robin apologizes to Aqualad about not listening to him about something being in the water – especially when that something turned out to be the Aquaman villain Charybdis. This leads them to discuss what it means to be a teammate.

Garth takes Robin’s apology in stride, reminding Dick of their mission statement: “…being one of the Teen Titans means constantly trying to do better by each other. That’s something I can always depend on.”

How This Mission Defines Who They Are as a Team

Most superhero teams have a mission statement that brings them together and conceptualizes their journey (beyond serving justice). The X-Men exist to help mutantkind and build better relations with humanity. The Justice League exists to battle threats too big to combat alone. The “Teen Titans” concept is essentially a team of former sidekicks, but it’s harder to pin down why they’re such a solid team. As the Titans’ stock continues to grow after shedding their sidekick personas, rebranding as new heroes like Nightwing and Tempest, it becomes harder to define what separates them as a team from others like the Justice League.

A Teen Titans mission statement is especially important to define now that the Titans have become the new face of DC Comics, surpassing the Justice League. While there are reasons to believe they’re better than the Justice League, it’s essential to understand what makes them different from the League now that they have taken their spot as DC’s premiere team. Defining the reasoning behind the Titans existence is the key to spotting that difference, and the difference lies in their mission statement: they are constantly working to better serve each other as friends, leading them to do “good work” in the world, too.

The Teen Titans “Do Better By Each Other”

This Mission Helps Them to Do Better By the World, Too

Nightwing with the Teen Titans in DC Comics

The Teen Titans have proven themselves as far more than just former sidekicks, but their shared experiences as sidekicks inform how they treat each other and approach their crime-fighting. These are former sidekicks who spent their lives trying to do better by their mentors, including both Batman and Aquaman. By now, they depend on each other and thus help each other grow by the same means. The Teen Titans are as much about doing better for each other as doing better for the world, which is an oddly poignant mission statement compared to other superhero teams.
