Ted Lasso’s Greatest Comedy Show Replacement Was Already Released On Hulu Last Year

It was disappointing to see the heartwarming Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso wrap up after only three seasons, but Hulu has the perfect substitute with a popular sports comedy that debuted on the streaming service in 2022. Ted Lasso struck a chord with audiences back in 2020 due to its good-hearted tone, fun humor, and creative character building that made it incredibly uplifting. The titular character, Ted (Jason Sudeikis), proved to be compelling through his likable demeanor during a TV era in which many of the most compelling main characters are antiheroes. Consequently, it was heartbreaking to see Ted Lasso end after only three seasons.

Ted Lasso Season 4: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

The Apple TV Plus comedy Ted Lasso has kept audiences rolling with laughter for three seasons already. Now here’s everything we know about season 4.

What also made Ted Lasso such a rarity was that many sports shows (or sports movies, for that matter) didn’t talk much about the dark subjects that Apple’s series had no qualms revolving its episodes around. So, when it ended, questions abounded about how the sentiment and themes of Ted Lasso could be replicated in another series. Thankfully, Hulu debuted its answer a year before the conclusion of Ted Lasso. Though Hulu’s comedy boasts some notable differences in tone and its primary sport, its success has already proven that it has taken the torch from Ted Lasso while being far from a carbon copy.

Hulu’s Shoresy Is The Perfect Sports Comedy Replacement For Ted Lasso

Despite Being More Adult, Its Similar Premise Makes It A Suitable Replacement

Hulu’s Shoresy, a Letterkenny spinoff about Jared Keeso’s foul-mouthed adult-league hockey player Shoresy, provides a welcome replacement for Ted Lasso. Though Ted Lasso was intended for mature audiences, it was an all-around light-hearted show about a rag-tag soccer team who unify and grow thanks to the main character, despite the odds being stacked against them. Shoresy follows a similar premise as it’s about a failing hockey team trying to prove itself, though the comedy is a lot more adult than Ted Lasso, with more inappropriate, goofy, and juvenile humor throughout.

Letterkenny spinoff Shoresy features a colorful cast of characters that some audiences may recognize, and others will be brand-new faces to viewers.

Despite being an intentionally grittier show than Ted Lasso, Shoresy follows some of the same beats in how uplifting it is in the team’s unity and the players’ development into better people. There are other smaller but still noteworthy similarities besides the premise, like the sports being played in their respective countries, for example, despite being very different. Ted Lasso takes place in the United Kingdom because of how important soccer is there, with Shoresy taking place in Canada as a significant hockey nation.

This Makes Their Comparisons Even Better

Much like Ted, Shoresy is the leader of his team, but the way he engages with his hockey teammates, friends, and people in general is completely different from Ted. Not exactly being a good guy, despite his heroic intentions, is actually a pretty hilarious joke in and of itself. The rough-around-the-edges Shoresy is very much a far cry from the do-gooder boy scout that Ted is, but both are still effective in their approaches to rebuilding a rag-tag team.

Even though the shows have very similar beats in their stories, watching two completely separate personality types take the same role to accomplish the same goal is pretty fun to see. In this way, despite Shoresy following some of the same heartfelt story arcs as Ted Lasso, it’s very much its own show. With Shoresy season 3 already renewed by Hulu, the comedy is expected to further its parallels to Ted Lasso as it shapes its lovable yet gritty hockey players into a solidified, supportive, and successful team.
