Team Avatar’s Bending Comes To Life In The Last Airbender Live-Action Motion Poster

The main team’s bending abilities come to life in the latest motion poster for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Adapting the three-season Nickelodeon animated series of the same name, Avatar: The Last Airbender’s live-action show is set for release on Netflix on February 22. The show features a leading cast of Gordon Cormier, Elizabeth Yu, Ian Ousley, Kiawentiio, Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Dallas Liu.

As shared by Cormier on Instagram, the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action show has received a new motion poster from Entertainment Weekly. Starting with Katara turning drizzling rain into a torrent, the poster showcases the bending and fighting abilities of her, Zuko, Aang, and Sokka. The motion poster ends by teasing the return of “Team Avatar.”

The poster also included audio reminiscent of the original series’ sweeping score. Cormier captioned the post by saying “Tell me they don’t all look super tuff here.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender Can Make Great Bending Effects

Portraying the show’s signature bending is one of the most anticipated visual elements of the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action TV show. This hype is especially the case given how much the M. Night Shyamalan film The Last Airbender was criticized for its portrayal of bending (e.g. one especially mocked scene where a horde of earth-bending men swarm together in order to move a single, small rock). Fans remain hopeful that the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series can improve upon these past errors through the advent of modern CGI technology.

The look of the Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer is a positive sign in the way of the show’s portrait of bending. Fire bending looks especially potent in the live-action series, as the conflagrations create a realistic, tangible threat even more so than in the animated series. The live-action series is already set to include a major fire-based action scene — the genocidal slaughter of the Southern Air Nomads by the Fire Nation — which will hopefully use strong bending special effects to its advantage.

Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender show will have to live up to the animated series, but the new trailer proves it can manage that.

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s motion poster bodes well for the use of bending in the series. In all three cases, the bending abilities look realistic but not overdone. The risk with any animated-to-live-action adaptation is to look like a visual hyperbole as one tries to change over the medium. At first glance, it seems that the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action show has avoided this common visual folly.
