Tawny Newsome Would “Happily” Play Live-Action Mariner In Star Trek: Picard’s Era

Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ Tawny Newsome would “happily” play Beckett Mariner in Star Trek: Picard season 3’s era. Newsome and Jack Quaid brought their animated Lower Decks Ensigns to live-action in a comedy crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which was directed by Jonathan Frakes. Ensigns Mariner and Brad Boimler jumping to live-action, with the cast of Strange New Worlds reciprocating by becoming animated characters, firmly established that both Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds share the same Star Trek canon. Animation and live-action are simply different mediums that are part of the same Star Trek universe.

In an interview with Inverse, Tawny Newsome was asked if she would reprise Beckett Mariner in another live-action Star Trek series. Referring to “the Legacy era,” meaning the 25th-century timeline set up by the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3 and its unproduced, proposed continuation, Star Trek: Legacy, Newsome said she would bring back live-action Mariner while also raising a pertinent question about Beckett’s age. Check out her quote below:

Oh, I’ll happily play any iteration of her in live-action. I think in the Legacy era though, I don’t know how old I would have to be. Mariner’s age is confusing to me, but who cares? Yeah, sure, I’ll show up!

How Old Is Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Beckett Mariner, Anyway?

Mariner’s age is a little confusing.

Questions have surrounded Lieutenant Beckett Mariner’s age since her debut, but Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4’s finale offered some hard numbers that clarify how old Mariner may be. Lower Decks season 4 established that Beckett attended Starfleet Academy in 2368, where she was classmates with Nova Squadron, i.e. Cadets Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill), Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill), and Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5 episode, “The First Duty.” Mariner was younger than Nova Squadron, but if she was possibly 16 in 2368, then Beckett was born around 2352. This also means Mariner is about 29 in Lower Decks season 4’s finale, which happens 13 years later.

Beckett Mariner was promoted to Lieutenant, junior grade, in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 along with her friends aboard the USS Cerritos, and Beckett bitterly fought her jump in rank, to no avail. Star Trek: Picard season 3’s ending, and its unrealized setup for Star Trek: Legacy, is set in 2402, which would be 21 years after Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4. This would make Mariner around 50 years old in Picard‘s 25th-century timeframe. Presuming Beckett is still in Starfleet, would her dream of remaining a Lower Decker lifer come true, or could she be Captain Mariner by then?
