Sylvester Stallone & Quentin Tarantino Both Have The Right Rambo Recasting Idea (Despite Different Actor Picks)

Sylvester Stallone and Quentin Tarantino have both openly talked about their Rambo casting ideas, and despite having different choices, they both seem right on the money. Co-written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, the five Rambo movies have collectively earned $819 million at the box office. Although it has been nearly five years since the last installment of the franchise came out and over four decades since Rocky: First Blood‘s release, the film franchise remains a cultural juggernaut.

Owing to its enduring popularity and timeless appeal, not only has Sylvester Stallone shown interest in revisiting the franchise as its director, but even Quentin Tarantino has expressed enthusiasm about creating his adaptation of David Morrell’s novel. While none of these projects have fully materialized, Stallone and Tarantino have made some fascinating claims about who they would want as Rambo in their respective films. Their choices may initially seem strange, but a closer look at them suggests they are perfect for the next Rambo movie.

Sylvester Stallone & Quentin Tarantino’s Picks For A New Rambo Actor Explained

Both Stallone and Tarantino have unexpected but intriguing casting choices for Rambo

Quentin Tarantino once opened up (via The Big Picture Podcast) about his ideas for a new Rambo movie. He had revealed that his film would be an accurate adaptation of David Morrell’s First Blood novel. Along with singing praises of the book, the director also disclosed his casting choices. He said that while he would want Kurt Russell to play the sheriff from First Blood, Adam Driver would be his choice for Rambo. Although Quentin Tarantino never fully materialized his ideas for Rambo, his casting choice of featuring Adam Driver as Rambo would have been interesting.

The original Rambo star, Sylvester Stallone, also had some creative thoughts about the casting choices for a new Rambo film. Since Stallone does an incredible job of portraying the character in all five Rambo films, it is hard not to associate only him with the role. However, Stallone raised some intrigue about the character’s future by voting for Ryan Gosling as his choice for Rambo. After Ryan Gosling told him how he would even dress up for school as Rambo, Stallone was impressed by how much he liked the character. As a result, he agreed that he would love to pass the baton to Gosling.

Sylvester Stallone’s work as John Rambo is iconic for many reasons. However, Ryan Gosling would be his pick for a replacement to reboot the series.

Ryan Gosling & Adam Driver Are Nothing Like Sylvester Stallone – And That’s Good For Rambo

Gosling and Driver could give Rambo a much-needed breath of fresh air

When their previous roles and overall acting personas are considered, Ryan Gosling and Adam Driver are nothing like Sylvester Stallone. Even when compared with one another, Gosling and Driver have had significantly different journeys as actors and usually end up in movie projects and genres that barely have anything in common. This arguably makes them unconventional choices for playing Rambo. However, considering how Sylvester Stallone has already epitomized the traditional action-hero archetype in his Rambo films, Driver and Gosling could bring something new to the table.

If another Rambo movie sees the light of the day, it should not emulate what Stallone achieved with the original films. Instead, it should bring a new spin to the familiar tropes and story elements of the original film while still honoring Sylvester Stallone’s legacy. With their acting experience grounded in versatile roles, Adam Driver and Ryan Gosling could bring new layers and nuances to Rambo, further cementing its legacy as one of the best action movie franchises. The two actors have also demonstrated their abilities as compelling action stars in several films, making them a good fit for Rambo.

Will Another Rambo Movie Ever Actually Happen?

No official confirmations about a new Rambo movie have been made

Since Quentin Tarantino has not talked much about his Rambo plans in recent years, it seems unlikely he will work on the project in the near future. However, a prequel Rambo show has been in the talks for quite some time. In 2022, Stallone also confirmed that he thinks “it’s going to happen.” He even revealed that he wanted to do it like “a Ken Burns documentary on Vietnam,” which shows how young Rambo shaped into the iconic character viewers know from Stallone’s movies. Since Rambo remains a popular IP, it seems likely that, sooner or later, new iterations of the franchise will emerge.
