Sylvester Stallone Confirms Creed 2 Trailer Drops Tomorrow [UPDATED]

Sylvester Stallone Confirms Creed 2 Trailer Drops Tomorrow [UPDATED]

UPDATED: The Creed 2 trailer is actually debuting on June 20, 2018. The original article follows.

The first trailer for Creed 2 is coming tomorrow according to Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone. Three years ago, Ryan Coogler revitalized the Rocky franchise in a major way. After six movies focusing on Stallone as the lovable but tough boxer Rocky Balboa, Coogler gave him a new role as the mentor to Adonis Creed. Played excellently by Michael B. Jordan, the film was a critical hit and even wound up generating serious awards buzz for Stallone. However, due to the busy schedule of Coogler (as he did Black Panther with Jordan), the project had to move forward without him behind camera.

The sequel is instead helmed by Steven Caple Jr. (The Land) with Coogler serving as an executive producer. The cast sees both Jordan and Stallone return to their respective fighting roles, as well as Tessa Thompson. An extra hit of nostalgia is included too with Dolph Lundgren reprising his role as Ivan Drago. This isn’t just a nostalgia play, though, and is integral to the story, which we’ll get to see very soon.

Stallone confirmed on Instagram that the first trailer for Creed 2 is set to be released sometime tomorrow. The trailer clocks in at one minute and 50 seconds according to Trailer-Track, which should give it plenty of time to tease what is coming this November. Despite the close release date, the trailer will actually be the first official look at the sequel – which Stallone says will also include the debut of the first poster.

Considering the lack of coverage Creed 2 has generally received, it is undoubtedly exciting that the first look is right around the corner. The story details in general have been scarce to come by, but writer Cheo Hodari Coker recently revealed a main theme is sons being haunted by their fathers. The ghost or shadow of Apollo Creed, originally played by Carl Weathers, loomed large over Adonis in the first film, but the championship he desires still alludes him. By happenstance, the next big fight for him will come against the man responsible for his father’s death.

Lundgren isn’t the only Drago who will be in the sequel, after all. Actual fighter Florian Munteanu is set to play his son, Viktor Drago, and will be Adonis’ main foe for the sequel. Considering how stylish Coogler made the fights in Creed, hopefully the incoming trailer will provide a few looks at the potentially several brawls between Viktor and Adonis. But, the heart of Creed is also important to maintain, so we’ll see if the trailer can successfully replicate those elements or if it shows how Caple is going to put his own spin on Creed 2 and the franchise.
