Sydney Sweeney’s New Horror Movie Box Office Is Good News Despite Career Low

Immaculate has secured a strong start to the weekend box office, despite stiff competition. The movie is led by Sydney Sweeney, Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, and director Michael Mohan, and tells the story of a young nun who becomes pregnant, despite remaining a virgin. When the rest of the convent starts to worship her, Sweeney’s Cecilia begins to uncover some horrifying secrets.

The R-rated Immaculate‘s stunning violence has earned some major praise, which has likely contributed to its success at the box office. In its opening weekend, Deadline reports that it will finish the weekend with a $5 million take. The movie has a $10 million budget and is competing against Kung Fu Panda 4, Dune: Part 2, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. With a fourth-place finish, Sweeney’s horror is already doing relatively well, though it still marks a new low for Sweeney in the domestic box office.

How Immaculate Compares To Sydney Sweeney’s Other Movies

Immaculate‘s opening marks a record-low for Sweeney, who typically earns much more at the box office. Her 2018 crime drama, 2018’s Under the Silver Lake, is an exception, as it earned a mere $35,000 in its domestic opening, according to Box Office Mojo, but the majority of her movies perform well. The 2020s have been excellent for Sweeney, as the impressive Immaculate is proving to be her lowest opening weekend of the decade. Even her 2023 romance, Anyone But You, and her 2024 movie, Madame Web, earned more than Immaculate‘s early $5 million domestic take in their opening weekends.

2023’s Reality is another movie with a low box office take for Sweeney, as it ended its run with $1.4 million overall. Still, it was only released at the international box office and was largely intended for HBO distribution. Domestically, Sweeney has been performing remarkably well. She is even proving to be a box office draw, as she has starred in three movies in the span of a year, including Anyone But You, Madame Web, and Immaculate. Eden, starring Sweeney, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law, and more, is expected to be released in 2025.

Sweeney’s performance in Anyone But You and Immaculate has earned immense praise over the past year. Madame Web was somewhat more disappointing for critics and audiences alike, but its issues are more attributable to Sony than to Sweeney. The actor is quickly making a name for herself in Hollywood and seems poised for stardom. Immaculate may be a box office disappointment compared to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, but, considering its budget, it is an impressive display for Sweeney.
