If The CW’s Supernatural television series isn’t enough to satisfy your hunger for relentless monster killing, you’re in luck as Warner Bros. Home Video is bringing Supernatural: The Anime Series to the US on July 26, with releases on Blu-Ray, DVD and On Demand.
Described as a re-imagining of Eric Kripke’s hit franchise, Supernatural: The Anime Series will cover the first two seasonal story-arcs of the series in 22 episodes, and follow Sam and Dean as they search for clues to their father’s disappearance.
Along the way viewers will see many familiar demons in anime form, but to not completely replicate the first two seasons, supplemental storylines will be included. From prequels and spin-offs to stories left untold, Supernatural: The Anime Series is looking to seamlessly blend itself within Supernatural‘s already rich mythology.
Helping to maintain the familiar Supernatural tone, Jared Padalecki will be reprising his role as Sam Winchester for all 22 episodes of Supernatural: The Anime Series. As for Dean Winchester, Jensen Ackles will be returning for the anime series, but only for the final two episodes. Now, before you get upset about the lack of Ackles in the anime series, I should note that the actor cast to voice Dean does an admirable job at replicating Ackles’ Dean Winchester.

Included in the release of Supernatural: The Anime Series will be introductions by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki before all 22 anime episodes. Additionally, interviews with the Ackles and Padalecki, series creator Eric Kripke and anime series directors Shigeyuki Miya and Atsuko Ishizuka will also be included on the disc.
Special features on the Blu-ray and DVD also include a two-part featurette, “The Making of Supernatural: The Anime Series,” which is described as “an intriguing behind-the-scenes revelation of how the live-action series was actually re-imagined into its new art form.”
To give fans a taste of what Supernatural: The Anime Series has to offer, Warner Bros. Home Video will be screening select episodes of the series at various conventions leading up to the July 26 release date.
As someone who is an avid fan of Supernatural but hates anime, it’s hard for me to completely get behind the anime series. While I have seen select parts of Supernatural: The Anime Series and completely admit that it looks amazing, something just didn’t click with me. Perhaps it’s the lack of Jensen Ackles, or simply the anime styling. Hopefully when the anime series is released, and I have a chance to see it in its entirety, my feelings will change. If not, there’s going to be one sad Supernatural fan running around with a $50 Blu-ray that he doesn’t want to watch.
