Supernatural Characters And Their Harry Potter Counterparts

Supernatural Characters And Their Harry Potter Counterparts

Certain fandoms are so massive that it only makes sense if they were to collide. The Harry Potter series and The CW’s Supernatural are such franchises, with both running for a long time. Where the Wizarding World has Harry as the Chosen One, Supernatural has Dean Winchester as the Soldier of Heaven, and so on.

Interestingly, characters in the two universes are comparable in more ways than one. These depend on their histories, actions, traits, and core aspects of their personalities. Whether it’s the calm and studious Sam and Hermione or the terrifying Voldemort and Azazel, there are heroes and villains from both stories that can appear to be two sides of the same coin.

Dean Winchester: Harry Potter

There are quite a few life lessons to be learned from Dean in Supernatural, and the same goes for Harry. One of the biggest things both realize is that they’re extremely reckless and love being the hero, as Harry and Dean have the knack for throwing caution to the wind and jumping in without any plan.

While Harry doesn’t have Dean’s appetite and vices, the characters share a deep love for those closest to them. Dean and Harry sacrificed themselves to protect their loved ones, knowing full well that they were walking to their doom. This combination of reckless abandon and fierce love makes the two protagonists vastly similar.

Jack Kline: Neville Longbottom

For many, Neville is the best Harry Potter wizard because of his good heart and inherent bravery. Jack is along the same lines, being just as naive and innocent as Neville, with his character progression all about maturing to find the hero he’s supposed to be.

The two characters are fan-favorites for their adorable attitude and unflinching pureness of personality. The pair never knew their parents but vowed to make them proud – Neville ended up saving the Wizarding World by slaying Nagini while Jack saved the universe by becoming the new God.

John Winchester: Albus Dumbledore

Although he was a father figure to the protagonist, many feel Albus Dumbledore was like a villain in Harry Potter for the way he manipulated the hero. John Winchester’s perception is the same amongst fans due to how he kept Sam and Dean constantly in the dark and expected his sons to blindly trust him.

The two characters are ultimately on the side of good as they sacrifice their lives for the heroes. They’re also the most competent fighters in their factions, with John considered a legendary hunter while Dumbledore is seen as the greatest wizard of all time. Mainly, though, it’s their manipulations that make them so much alike.

Bobby Singer: Sirius Black

Harry and Dean are the kind of protagonists that desperately needed a father figure and person who actually listened to their problems. Sirius and Bobby tick the right boxes here, with the two seen as the only people that the main characters could trust with their secrets.

Sirius wore his heart on his sleeve and was prone to outbursts against people he disliked, like Snape, but was extremely loyal to his best friend James, and Harry by extension. In the same vein, Bobby could be hard on others but was always the man the heroes could rely on no matter what. Both Bobby’s and Sirius’ deaths hit the protagonists extremely hard as well.

Crowley: Draco Malfoy

There are a good amount of quotes that prove Draco Malfoy’s evilness in Harry Potter, which is comparable to Crowley’s own evil words on Supernatural. Both characters have a flair for drama and love to be in the spotlight. Malfoy routinely antagonized Harry and his friends for fun while Crowley killed off the Winchesters’ friends just to mess with them.

They still happen to be fan favorites, with viewers loving their style and charisma. Malfoy ultimately backed down from the Death Eaters when he realized true evil was the way Voldemort conducted himself. Meanwhile, Crowley also became one of the good guys after his experiences with Lucifer made him see that even he had his limits.

Lucifer: Gellert Grindelwald

Lucifer and Grindelwald are the kinds of villains who use their charismatic influence to gain followers. They justify their evil actions by claiming they’re doing it for the greater good – Grindelwald wanted to eliminate the Muggles and passed it off as a mission of peace, while Lucifer wanted humans dead and claimed he wanted the angels to be free.

In reality, both villains only look out for themselves, although their lies are so grand that they’ve even come to believe them to be true. Lucifer is one of the most powerful entities in the universe as an Archangel, to go with Grindelwald’s status as among the greatest wizards thanks to his possession of the Elder Wand.

Charlie Bradbury: Luna Lovegood

There’s always a character that doubles as the heart of the group who can come across as naive but actually carries significant wisdom. Charlie was the free-spirited friend of Sam and Dean whose mastery of technology was essential to the heroes, but her knack for making them confront what was truly on their minds was her greatest feature.

Likewise, Luna was called “Loony” by some, only to turn out to be very perceptive. So much so that she was the only one able to comfort Harry after Sirius’ death. Luna’s imaginative mind and endless optimism were shared by Charlie, with the pair’s presence being so infectious that the heroes started to see them as a sort of younger sibling.

Castiel: Ron Weasley

Although Ron isn’t nearly as awkward and stoic as Castiel, the two have notable similarities. The biggest connection between them is their loyalty, with Castiel’s devotion to Dean looking quite like Ron’s was toward Harry. They also tend to be the butt of others’ jokes but can do little about it.

Castiel was more of a follower who only reluctantly became a leader and took to seeking Sam and Dean’s direction instead. Ron was much like this toward Harry and Hermione, having completed the trio but very comfortable with only speaking up when he felt he needed to.

Azazel: Lord Voldemort

Azazel was perhaps the scariest villain in Supernatural, carrying a mean streak and thirst to kill. Voldemort was notorious for using the killing curse liberally and the fear factor he commanded remains unparalleled in the Wizarding World for how brutal his ways were.

Both villains had a large following and promised their servants great rewards for their loyalty. Azazel had the demons doing his bidding while Voldemort had the Death Eaters follow his every command. The two even have similar dark humor that depends on how they can psychologically torture someone who is powerless to defend themselves against them.

Sam Winchester: Hermione Granger

Prior to joining Dean at hunting, Sam was studious, driven, and adamant in wanting to do his own thing. This can easily describe Hermione, too, who was the brains of the trio and generally wanted things down her way. Both characters are also responsible for coming up with the overall plans for the heroes and are inherently talented.

Sam showed his passionate side when he took Jack under his wing and was always the one willing to forgive. Hermione was along the same lines when she displayed compassion toward House-elves and stuck by Harry even when Ron left. Sam and Hermione would no doubt have gotten along sportingly if they had ever met.
