Fans of DC Comics’ Dark Nights: Metal series have a lot to be excited for in 2020. A follow up mini-series has been in the works for a while and Scott Snyder even gave his Twitter followers a sneak peek at what’s to come when he posted promotional art featuring Wonder Woman with a chainsword. Now DC is giving fans another small preview of a new bare-knuckle warrior version of Superman.

Dark Nights: Metal was a hugely successful crossover that introduced readers to various evil versions of the DC heroes from the Dark Multiverse. The series ran from June of 2017 to March of 2018 and was hugely impactful on all the DC titles. One of the most popular characters to come out of this series was the terrifying Batman Who Laughs. The character appeared in several other titles, his own limited series, and was even DC’s Villain of the Year. The creative team of Snyder and Greg Capullo has been great for DC Comics so far, so the prospect of another massive crossover has both fans and critics excited to see what comes next.

The reveal of this new version of Superman gives readers a great insight as to what they can expect from this series. Superman himself seems to be very primal in nature, wearing rags and chains as part of his uniform. His skin seems to be, at least partially, made of stone. No matter what, this looks like a superman who’s bred for combat. There is no confirmation yet as to whether or not he comes from the same universe as the chainsword-wielding Wonder Woman does, but the similar styles would appear to suggest that is the case.

With DC promising that “Mayhem is imminent,” we can expect that this series will be just as over the top and thrilling at the 2017 mini-series. Ever since the launch of The New 52 way back in 2011, Snyder and Capullo haven’t been afraid to put DC’s biggest heroes through massive trials and changes. This is the same team that gave fans Batman: the Court of Owls and the Batman: Last Knight on Earth series! So you can expect that whatever they have in store for Superman, it’s going to be something Earth-shattering.

Fans will have to wait and see which hero DC will be unveiled next, but now’s the time to start speculating! What new versions of the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and others will we see? Are the characters untied in their own version of the Justice League? The only way to know is to pick up the first issue when DC releases it later this year.
