Superman’s New Kryptonian Ally is Betraying His Greatest Enemy

Warning: includes a preview for Action Comics #1034!

In a new preview for Action Comics #1034, Superman‘s new Kryptonian ally, Thao-La, just betrayed Mongul! A few issues ago, Superman and his family discovered Thao-La and a group of refugees who had escaped Warworld and were being pursued by some of Mongul’s Warzoons. They were able to stop the Warzoons and save the refugees from Warworld. Since then, Superman has tried to reach through to the rightfully very scared Thao-La. With the help of Supergirl, they figured out that the refugees are descendants of an extinct Kryptonian race.

Not long after Thao-La’s arrival, a flashback shows that she was sent to Earth by order of Mongul. She didn’t escape Warworld, she was let go on a mission to take down the Man of Steel. Since then, Mongul has been watching Thao-La’s every move. Somehow, the ruler of Warworld has cameras monitoring her, no matter where she goes. Although there are other Kryptonian refugees, Thao-La is the main focus due to her showcasing extraordinary abilities and speaking in an ancient Kryptonian language.

DC Comics has released a set of new preview pages for Action Comics #1034 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Christian Duce, Daniel Sampere, and Adriano Lucas. This issue kicks off where the last one ended, with the escaped Warzoons facing off against Lois Lane and Thao-La in the Fortress of Solitude. It seems that Thao-La has officially picked a side as she fights alongside Lois. She’s been on the fence lately due to the impending threat of Mongul watching over her shoulder. It’s not an easy decision, but it’s clear that she wants nothing to do with the Warzoons or Mongul.

The Warzoons are incredibly powerful, one of them even has a so-called “gift” that he uses against Thao-La. It’s some kind of glowing orb that seemingly supercharges him. During the fight, the head Warzoon notes that Thao-La has grown stronger than ever before. The aggressive yellow assailant is confused by how powerful she has become, but to seasoned Superman readers it’s clear that this is because of her time spent under Earth’s yellow sun. The fight between Thao-La and the Warzoons will continue to be a close call, until Thao-La blasts out her blue heat vision, which she will surely do!

It’s great to see Thao-La finally deciding to break free of Mongul’s chains, both literally and metaphorically. The ruler of Warworld will not take kindly to her betrayal and will probably send more Warzoons to kill her. Superman is taking the fight to Warworld very soon, despite the fact that Mongul will have the upper hand considering that Superman won’t be under the yellow sun and he’ll be on Mongul’s home ground. However, if Mongul comes to Earth, Thao-La has a strong chance to take him down considering how powerful she is here. Action Comics #1034 releases on August 24.
