Superman’s Human Friends Step Up, Becoming Metropolis’ Ultimate Heroes

Superman’s Human Friends Step Up, Becoming Metropolis’ Ultimate Heroes

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman: House of Brainiac Special #1!With Superman and other heroes currently off-world, the Man of Steel’s underrated human allies are stepping up to protect Metropolis. Tensions boiling and anti-alien sentiments growing to an all-time high but thankfully, two of Clark’s long-time friends are doing their best to ensure Superman’s city is a place for everyone.

In Superman: House of Brainiac Special #1‘s story “Campaign Headquarters” by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh, Perry White is still running for mayor and Superman’s pal Bibbo Bibbowski is helping the campaign. Things aren’t going well, though, as White is being challenged by Garon Blake, a populist candidate who espouses xenophobic views in the wake of Brainiac’s recent attack.

At a debate in Metropolis’ alien-populated A-Town, White passionately speaks out against Blake’s anti-alien platform. In the crowd, several Blake supporters attempt to assault an alien child. Fortunately, Bibbo fights the anti-alien protestors, allowing the child to get away safely.

In what should have been a normal day, Brainiac launched a full-scale assault on Metropolis. Armed with drones and an army of Czarnian fighters, Brainiac tore through the city, kidnapping every person with powers. Almost every member of the Superman Family was bottled and taken away. Even Superman was nearly apprehended (though Lex Luthor managed to take Superman’s place at the last second). Furious at the kidnapping, Superman sought out the one person he thought could lead him to Brainiac: Lobo. After successfully convincing the bounty hunter, Clark and Lobo ventured into space to find Brainiac and recover Superman’s family.

Prejudice has been brewing in Metropolis after Janan al Ghul founded Blue Earth, an extremist, anti-alien movement. Though al Ghul is gone, her sentiments live on and are being used by opportunists like Garon Blake for their own means. Unfortunately, even if Superman and his allies were around, there’s only so much they can do to fight hate and bigotry against aliens. But in the Kryptonian family’s absence, people like Perry and Bibbo are exactly what Metropolis needs right now. Now more than ever, Superman’s city needs people who are willing to fight for the oppressed.

Sure, Superman might aid Metropolis by taking care of villains like Atomic Skull or Prankster. But more than just fighting villains, Superman is someone who tries his best to inspire others and defend those who need defending. Neither Perry nor Bibbo have powers, but they’re doing exactly what Clark would do if he were on Earth: Speaking out against hate and risking their own safety to protect those who can’t protect themselves. Superman might be gone for a bit, but with his human friends doing what’s right, Metropolis is in great hands.
