Clark inquires about Kara’s exhausted state, and she tells him about her dream, as well as the stories she’d heard about Doomsday on Krypton. Supergirl asks Superman what it was like being killed by Doomsday. Clark mentions that while he’s been through several terrifying ordeals, few things were as frightening for Superman as the day he fought Doomsday. Clark describes how scary the experience was, knowing he was facing a monster that had the power to kill him. Supergirl tries to go about her day before Martian Manhunter appears to her and reveals he was responsible for Kara’s vision. Superman fans all remember the dark day that Doomsday came to Earth, tearing his way around the planet until Clark put the rampaging monster down. The Last Son of Krypton gave his own life to stop Doomsday, a moment that stunned the world. Thankfully, DC’s premier hero eventually returned. Unfortunately, Doomsday did as well. While Superman has had several rematches since and won them all, every time the beast returns, Clark always recalls the painful memories of his first fight with Doomsday.

Superman mentions he’s fought numerous powerful threats since, and it’s true. Since Doomsday, he’s encountered armies of evil Batmen, Doctor Manhattan, and a dark army composed of the DC Universe’s worst cosmic threats. And while those all presented their own unique challenge, Doomsday was something different altogether. He was pure, raw destruction. No evil plan or plot to overthrow the world. Just a force made to kill and survive by any means possible. Superman had rarely ever encountered something so violent or malicious in his life. But beyond being just a malevolent force, Doomsday was Clark’s ultimate reminder that despite all his power, Superman was still a mortal being.

Doomsday Proved That Even Superman Has a Limit

Doomsday DC Comics

Superman has faced life-or-death situations before. From kryptonite to Lex Luthor’s various schemes, he’s encountered numerous things that could have ended his life. But from the moment he met Doomsday, it was a certainty that this villain could kill him. Dying at the Kryptonian monster’s hands left such an impression on Superman that years after the fact, he still speaks about the event with a chill in his voice. Even Clark’s friends acknowledge how horrifying the experience was for Superman and do their best not to bring it up with him if possible. If Doomsday still strikes fear in Superman’s heart, he may not be ready for the potentially new and improved version waiting for him in Hell. Fans can see more of the villain even Superman is wary of in Action Comics Presents: Doomsday Special #1, on sale August 29th.
