Superman: Legacy Story Tease Makes The DCU’s First Team Movie Even More Important

Superman: Legacy Story Tease Makes The DCU’s First Team Movie Even More Important

A recent photo from a Superman: Legacy table read showed the DCU film’s logo looks suspiciously like Superman’s Kingdom Come costume, which teases the film’s potential antagonist. The photo, which was shared by Hawkgirl actor Isabel Merced on an Instagram story, showed the name plate given to Superman: Legacy actors sporting the movie’s version of the Superman logo. With the logo bearing such a strong resemblance to the Kingdom Come version, it would be safe to assume that the movie will be somewhat inspired by the comic.

DC’s Kingdom Come was a miniseries that focused on the Justice League coming out of retirement when the following generation of heroes had seemingly lost their way. These new heroes were violent and used extreme measures that the Justice League disapproved of. While the Justice League doesn’t seem to have been formed yet in Superman: Legacy, the DCU does have a clear parallel to the younger heroes in the book: The Authority. After all, The Authority has frequently used more violent methods that the Justice League typically wouldn’t employ.

Superman: Legacy’s Big Story Tease Makes The Authority Way More Important

If Superman: Legacy‘s logo really is a direct reference to Kingdom Come, then The Authority member in the movie may be playing a very pivotal role in the DCU. Since there is no Justice League yet in this version of the story, then The Authority may be directly responsible for their forming. If Superman comes into conflict with The Authority and finds that he needs allies to help back him up, this could lead him to seek out other heroes with a similarly strong moral compass.

Superman: Legacy will already include members of the Justice League like Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern. It isn’t too much of a leap to assume that the movie will at least lay some of the groundwork for the future team. As there is only one character from The Authority, The Engineer, it is unlikely that Superman: Legacy will fully adapt the Kingdom Come story. Instead, the movie will likely set up a future conflict between the two super teams, which will take place after The Authority gets their movie.

How Adapting Kingdom Come Would Help DCU’s Superman Be The Best Live-Action Version Yet

Superman looks angry in art from DC's Kingdom Come

By pitting Superman against other heroes, the DCU will have the chance to give him a much stronger characterization. When previous versions of Superman fought existential threats like Zod, Superman’s beliefs were never fully explored. After all, not wanting the entire world to be destroyed is far from a complex moral framework. However, by pitting Superman against other heroes whose methods he disagrees with, DC can show that Superman believes there is a right and wrong way to be a superhero and present a more nuanced look at what can be considered justice.

Previously, Captain America: Civil War did a good job telling a similar story, which allowed for a more nuanced look at the responsibility of superheroes. If Superman: Legacy and subsequent DC movies followed this framework, then it could easily establish Superman as a figure similar to Captain America who will stand up for what he believes in, even if it brings him into conflict with other heores. Of course, this type of story has also been told poorly before in Batman V Superman, so Superman: Legacy will have to be careful to meaningfully set up both sides of this conflict.
