The seemingly never-ending crises that continuously imperil the DC Universe will meet their end one day, and Superman is the reason why. Superman #708 reveals that Clark Kent’s greatest legacy could end one of the biggest DCU problems for good.
In the last several decades, one of the biggest issues the DC heroes have endured was its reoccurring ‘Crisis’ events. Whenever a threat rears its head that has its eyes on the multiverse, the encounter is more often than not deemed a crisis. Such events have been the subject of Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis, and of course, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Though the heroes always manage to overcome the challenges brought on by a Crisis, they aren’t without their costs, such as the death of Supergirl or the Flash. Crises also imperil the fabric of the DC multiverse, sometimes even eliminating worlds filled with an incalculable number of innocent lives.
But the work Superman is doing today may be key to stopping the Crisis events of tomorrow. In Superman #708 by J. Michael Straczynski, Chris Roberson, and Eddy Barrows, the titular hero is approached by the Superman Squad, a collection of heroes from across time and space, all inspired by Superman. With Clark facing doubts that he’s actually improving the world, the Squad has come to show him that his influence is indeed making the world a better place. They show him the vast number of heroes within the Squad’s ranks and reveal the Man of Steel’s values have spread to beings across the universe. The Squad also displays the threats they easily take care of, briefly providing a look at a confrontation with the Infinite Man in a fight they’ve named the “Crisis in Infinite Eras“.
Superman Creates A Legacy That Could End Crises
Ever since the heroes of the DC Universe were forced to fight the Anti-Monitor in Crisis on Infinite Earths, it’s been one cataclysm after another. From Darkseid launching an assault on reality to Pariah attempting to reshape the multiverse at any cost, Crisis events have put the safety and security of the DCU in danger repeatedly, and it seems like there’s no sign of stopping. But could an entire army of heroes, all modeled after the greatest hero finally end this terrible plight?
While not every member of the Superman Squad is as powerful as the Man of Steel himself, they are a proactive group bound by the values he shared. A large Superman-like group of heroes wouldn’t wait to react in response to a Crisis, but rather, they would proactively seek out and try to stop them before they become the multiversal calamities. Crises are rarely a problem in the far-flung history of the DC Universe, and that may be the doing of the Superman Squad. While the DC Universe is suffering from them now, they may one day be rid of Crisis events thanks to Superman’s legacy team.
