Superman Admits He’s Nothing Without Lois Lane

Superman Admits He’s Nothing Without Lois Lane

Warning: Spoilers for Superman #26

Superman is the Man of Steel, a basically indestructible powerhouse who can take care of himself and the world all on his his own. Or at least that’s how most of the world has come to perceive him. Considering his immense power, tendency to face obstacles on his own, and history of coming out victorious, it makes sense that people would believe him to be more of a lone wolf. But in Superman #26, readers learn that even The Metropolis Marvel needs a support system.

Earlier this year Superman revealed his secret identity to the world, and he’s since been dealing with the fallout. He’s starting to grasp the true reason he let everyone know his truth, coming to terms with what it means for his personal and everyday life, and also realizing how it is he’s able to deal with it all. He tells Lois that he’s come to see that stress most likely plaid a big part in why he revealed his secret identity, but he also goes on to tell her that he doesn’t often feel the burden of that stress he’s constantly undergoing. Lois seems to mirror the thoughts of most fans’ assumptions about him by guessing that the reason he’s not so bogged down by all of the burdens he takes on is because he is, in fact, Superman. But that’s not true, being a hero, being the Man of Steel, is not what keeps him afloat.

He admits, in a very touching conversation, that Lois is actually what keeps him grounded. The reason he remains centered is because he is never really alone. Her company and her presence have had a healing effect on him since day one. She’s never let him bare it all on his own. Not only is it heartwarming, but it displays a vulnerable side to Superman readers don’t always get to see. Normally he is the wise one, providing advice, saving the day, what have you. But in the beginning of this issue, he showed a part of himself even he admitted he doesn’t speak to enough.

Superman Admits He’s Nothing Without Lois Lane

This issue wasn’t the first time the Man of Steel proved to readers that he both cherishes and relies on those close to him. One iconic relationship that has proven to be extremely important to Superman and Clark Kent alike is his friendship with Jimmy Olsen. After the truth of his identity came out, one of the people he was most concerned about was Jimmy. He didn’t want the fact that he hid it from him to threaten the bromance they’d fostered over the years. It was important to him, because the friendship is important to him, because as much as Jimmy leans on him, he leans on Jimmy; and their interaction in Superman: Heroes #1 proved that. Jimmy knew this and asked for a ride, just to provide a small act of reassurance to prove to Clark that they’ll be okay no matter what.

It’s common for superheroes to be seen as lone wolves, fighting for justice on their own, not needing anyone else to help them through hardship; but more often than not, that ends up being a misconception. Superman is no exception. He may be capable of great power and resilience, but he isn’t immune to the human condition, even if he is technically an alien. He cares deeply about those he holds close and relies on a support system just like everyone else. It is that system which helps him take on everything that’s thrown his way, and he wouldn’t be the same without them.
