Supergirl, the latest TV dramatization of a DC Comics character, has already begun production on its second episode. In addition to revealed plot developments and recent casting decisions, we already know to expect a showdown with super-villain Reactron (played by Sons of Anarchy star Chris Browning) within the first couple of episodes, and that the show has already found its Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan-Tatum).
Based on footage from the set, Supergirl is aiming to delight fans of the DC Comics super-heroine. CBS hasn’t stopped in its promotional campaign leading up to the show’s release later this fall, having now unveiled a fresh TV spot that feature the introduction of a key supporting player in the Supergirl mythos.
In the video above, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) is greeted by a holographic recording of her mother, Alura Zor-El (Laura Benanti), before cutting to a montage of Kara finding her inner hero, and becoming the costumed vigilante that she was always destined to become. Kara’s mother urges her daughter to search within herself and “find the way back to the brave girl you always were,” with the show’s supporting players urging the protagonist to stop blending in and finally stand out (as the clip’s title cards blatantly command).
Based on the success of DC TV shows such as Arrow and The Flash on The CW, CBS looks to be stepping up to the plate for DC Comics (cinematically speaking). Standing as an example of another superhero TV show with production values to rival Marvel Television and ABC productions like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, Supergirl appears to be in service of an already mounting comeback for DC Comics on the small screen.
Likewise, Supergirl lead Melissa Benoist appears ready to take on the task of reinvigorating viewer enthusiasm for DC Comics’ myriad independent properties. In donning those familiar-looking tights, Benoist is positioned to deliver an enthusiastic and (hopefully) charismatic performance, starting with the show’s official premiere debut later this year.
