Supergirl Reveals The Deadly Price of Being Superman’s Cousin

Warning! Minor spoilers for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2 ahead!

The second issue of DC Comics’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow briefly explores the deadly ramifications of being in Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl‘s position as Superman’s cousin. This issue of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows Supergirl and her newfound friend Ruthye as they journey by cosmic bus to catch the fugitive known as Krem. Their adventures are further examined through the lens of Ruthye’s narration.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is an eight-issue comic book series that focuses on Kara as she tries to find her place in the world. Her cosmic adventures are being written by Tom King (Batman, Superman: Up in the Sky), who is looking to get to the core of her character through this series. The artist for this limited series is Bilquis Evely (The Dreaming, Wonder Woman), who is joined by colorist Mat Lopes (The Dreaming, Batgirl).

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2, Ruthye and Kara get off the bus to enjoy some grub and drinks at a Mos Eisley-esque bar and bus stop. The two encounter a mushroom-headed assassin, who is featured on the variant cover of the issue seen below by Lee Weeks (Superman: Lois and Clark). He attempts to kill Supergirl because he has sworn vengeance on Superman and his family after the hero sent his brothers to the Phantom Zone. Ruthye’s narration provides a lot of analysis for the reader about the situation, Supergirl as a person, and how the people around her act since she is related to Superman.

Ruthye mentions that these types of situations in which Supergirl is threatened due to something Superman did are common. Rather than going after Superman, they go after his cousin since, as Ruthye observes, the killers in question “presumed her to be his soft underbelly.” Thankfully, Supergirl is anything but “soft,” and is capable of dishing out punches on par with her cousin to take out these opponents. But her life appears to be inconvenienced, and if she happens to come up against the wrong foe, Supergirl may find herself in a lot of trouble. She is no stranger to death, after all.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow presents an opportunity to delve into the character of Supergirl, and is another chance of getting her out from under her cousin’s shadow. This particular issue highlights some of the unintentional troubles that come from being related to the Man of Steel. The limited series is really taking a deep dive into Kara’s character, answering fans’ questions in the aftermath of Future State, which saw Supergirl claim the title of Superwoman and wrestle with her relationship to her cousin. The second issue is currently available in comic book stores and digitally for fans of the Girl of Steel.
