After just two episodes, the new CBS series Supergirl has shown that it has no problems with providing primetime superhero excitement or with the expansion of the Superman mythos. The series has, already, carved out a niche for itself with Kryptonian force in its portrayal of Kara Danvers (aka, Kara Zor-El) and her ascension as a superhero and her embracing of her cousin’s heroic legacy.
None of this should be a shock for fans of Greg Berlanti, who oversees Arrow and The Flash over on CW and whose team is partially responsible for bringing Supergirl to the airwaves. Starring Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee) in the titular role, Mehcad Brooks (True Blood) as Jimmy Olsen, David Harewood (Homeland) as Hank Henshaw, and Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy) as Alex Danvers, Supergirl already boasts a cast of TV veterans that legitimize the series with their talent. Even with its impressive cast, however, Supergirl isn’t done growing yet.
The Mary Sue is reporting that Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Emma Caulfield – whose more recent TV appearances include her role as the Blind Witch on Once Upon a Time – will be joining the cast of Supergirl in an upcoming appearance as Cameron Chase, a character that should be familiar to fans of DC comics. In the DC Comics Universe, the character is known as a tough-as-nails DEO agent who’s focused on solving supernormal crimes.
Here is how the Supergirl TV show version of Chase is described:
“After her father’s violent murder, Cameron Chase decided to dedicate her life to law enforcement. Now a stern, no holds barred FBI agent, Chase’s weapons of choice are manipulation and manpower. With little sympathy, and plenty of suspicions, she pursues her targets with ruthless determination.”
As of yet, Chase is only confirmed for one episode of Supergirl, but it certainly seems as though there is potential to grow into a recurring character. After all, Kara and her sister Alex both work for Henshaw in the DEO, a unit tasked with identifying and containing extraterrestrial threats. It would make sense for the DEO to recruit from other agencies when possible, and Cameron Chase certainly fits the bill of a potential asset.
The DC Comics version of Chase has been shown to have the ability to dampen the powers of any metahuman should they prove to be a threat to her. Powers like these would be intriguing to the DEO on Supergirl, and it’s not hard to see how she might be given a larger role in the series as it progresses. Considering, also, her skills as a detective and a hacker, she could prove to be a valuable asset to “Team Supergirl”, too.
Still, whether as a one off or a recurring character, it’ll be nice to see Caulfield again. The actress is best known for playing former vengeance demon turned human Anya on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and has mostly been seen in the occasional guest starring role since that cult TV series ended back in 2002. Caulfield, who bears a strong resemblance to Cameron Chase from the comics, is more than capable of becoming the intense and driven agent to life on the small screen.
