When Supercell premiered in theaters in early 2023, it didn’t earn a huge box office return, but Supercell 2 could still happen. During Supercell’s theatrical run, the movie earned less than $40,000 for its worldwide box office gross. Not very many audience members found it in theaters, but an audience has certainly found it on Hulu. It became one of Hulu’s trending movies after being added to the streamer in August 2023.
Supercell follows William Brody (Daniel Diemer) as he struggles to understand his father’s passion for chasing tornados. He connects with the uncle (Skeet Ulrich) he didn’t know along the way. The movie has seen comparisons to Twister because of that storm-chasing storyline. Supercell might be the spiritual successor to Twister, but with growing interest in the movie, there could be Supercell 2 news on the way.

There isn’t any official Supercell 2 news yet, but that could very well change. That’s because Supercell has become a surprising hit on streaming and social media. After being added to Hulu, Supercell became one of the platform’s trending movies and stayed there. Though it might not have done well in theaters, having access to a streaming platform allows the audience to take a chance on a movie that might not have seen the best reviews. That’s true with Supercell.
Supercell sits at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes for critical reviews. That’s certified rotten for the review aggregator website. Despite that, it has an 81% (which would be considered fresh) audience score instead – and more than 10 times the audience reviews than critical reviews. On the other hand, Letterboxd sees Supercell sitting at a 2.4 out of 5 stars. What’s more important than the actual reviews is that Supercell is becoming a talking point among those who love movies. Viewers are watching the movie on Hulu and engaging with review sites and social media to discuss what they liked about the film in a “so bad it’s good” way.
Supercell is getting people to engage in a way that is usually reserved for blockbuster movies. With word of mouth getting more people interested in it every day, Supercell 2 news wouldn’t be unheard of.
Supercell 2 Is Not Confirmed
Supercell 2 is not officially confirmed. After the box office performance of the movie, it would have initially been surprising if Supercell 2 was greenlit. Now, with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ongoing, it’s unlikely Supercell 2 would be confirmed right away. A Supercell 2 release date could potentially be announced after the strikes for fair pay have concluded if the momentum of Supercell on digital platforms continues its positive trend.
Of course, before Supercell 2 could even release, there is an actual sequel to Twister in the works as well. Though Supercell has been called “Twister-lite” and a spiritual successor to the 1996 movie, Twister will see its own sequel hit theaters in 2024. No plot details have been released yet.
Supercell 2 Cast
If a Supercell sequel is greenlit, it’s not clear who would return for the cast. A Supercell 2 cast could be almost entirely new since much of the conflict is resolved and the Brody family is brought back together for the most part. Anne Heche passed away after filming the first movie, and would not be able to reprise her role, but it is possible other actors could return.
If a sequel is made, the Supercell 2 cast could include Daniel Diemer as William Brody, however, since his love of storms and his desire to understand his late father are the driving force behind the first film. He could be establishing his own path of study related to supercells in a sequel.
Skeet Ulrich as Uncle Roy could also reappear. It’s Roy who gives William an idea of who his father was as a researcher and storm chaser when his mother doesn’t want to talk about it. Their relationship could be explored further in a sequel.
Supercell 2 Story: How Supercell Sets Up A Sequel
Supercell answers a lot of the questions it initially poses, which makes it hard to determine just where a Supercell 2 story could go. The movie sees William and his mother resolve their differences, it also sees William get to know his uncle and better understand his father, and it also sees him use the technology his father initially designed to escape a supercell with his life. All of that sounds like a neatly tied-up happy ending.
The idea behind disaster movies and especially storm-chasing, however, is that there is always more to learn. A Supercell 2 story would likely play into that very idea. After all, despite William being able to live to see another supercell, that doesn’t mean he isn’t still fascinated by the storm cells that create dangerous tornados. His interest in them, which echoes his mother, father, and uncle, would likely lead to him continuing to study them and be able to save more lives.
A Supercell 2 story would need to continue with a new avenue of study for its fictional storm chasers, and audiences would want to see it.
