Super Smash Bros. ‘Proud Beard’ Event Emphasizes Facial Hair

The next spirit event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will revolve around characters that have some form of facial hair. Facial hair is something that is worth celebrating, as many of gaming’s most iconic mascots boast some form of facial hair.

With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being one of gaming’s biggest crossover, it’s expected that there has been a great amount of spirit events that have featured a variety of different characters. Many of these events have been used to promote the newest Nintendo releases, with the current event featuring characters from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. All of the DLC characters that get added have their own spirit boards dedicated to them, and even those that could only make it as Mii Costumes have received events dedicated to them. There are currently over 1400 spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and with three more DLC characters on the way, that number will only grow higher.

Starting Friday January 15th, characters with facial hair will appear on the spirit board in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for three days. On the cover of the promotional art for the event is a taste of what characters will appear more often during this event. This includes fighters such as Wario-Man, Solid Snake, and gaming’s most iconic mascot, Super Mario. Others include Von Kaiser from Punch-Out, Daruk from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Broque Monsieur from the Mario & Luigi series, and many others.

Many types of facial hair: beards, mustaches, goatees, and more have been featured on gaming’s most iconic characters. Super Mario, the plumber that made the game industry what it is today, still has his signature mustache to this day. Kratos from God of War has only grown his beard with time, as seen in 2018’s God of War. Geralt from The Witcher series is a character who’s proud of the beard that he’s acclaimed, and doesn’t take kindly to having it being shaven.

With how many characters there are that have facial hair, it’s no wonder that it’s being celebrated in this manner in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If Super Smash Bros. wanted to go even further with this celebration, then having Kratos or Geralt was an upcoming fighter would be both unexpected and fitting. Geralt especially has built up an iconic status through his games and Netflix series. The odds might not be entirely in his favor, but Geralt would fit in perfectly with the other bearded and mustachioed fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
