The Super Mario Bros. Movie includes a post-credits scene that sets up a potential sequel. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally in theaters and, while a sequel to the film hasn’t officially been confirmed, the post-credits scene certainly suggests that there is more story to tell and more Super Mario game characters to introduce.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is full of familiar characters from the world of the Super Mario games. Bowser, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and a plethora of others play critical roles throughout the animated adaptation. While it tells a single story that gets wrapped up by The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s ending, there is a post-credits scene that posits a continuation of the story by way of a new character. Super Mario Bros’ Post-Credits Scene Reveals A Crucial Game Character

Super Mario Bros Post-Credits Scene & Sequel Set-Up Explained

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s post-credits scene is brief, but in the film’s return to the underground Brooklyn tunnels, a white and green egg — likely left behind when the Mushroom Kingdom’s world was sucked into a pipe leading to the human world — begins to shake and crack open. Before the screen goes black, the egg begins to hatch and Yoshi’s voice is heard saying his name. In the games, Yoshi, an adorable green and white dinosaur who hails from Yoshi’s Island, is Mario’s beloved sidekick, and an ally to him and his brother Luigi.

First introduced in 1990’s Super Mario World, Yoshi is a part of the Yoshi species, and a well-known and playable character in the Mario games. Yoshi is capable of flight and laying eggs that can be used as weapons. Considering his history in the games, it’s a surprise that Yoshi wasn’t included in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it also means Yoshi’s arrival in the film’s potential sequel will be all the more special.

How Yoshi’s Arrival Sets Up Super Mario Bros. Movie 2

Yoshi being featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s post-credits scene suggests the character will most certainly appear in the sequel. While the rest of the characters return to their respective kingdoms, Yoshi’s arrival in Brooklyn could mean that he will run amok in the city streets, triggering Mario and Luigi’s return to the human world to find Yoshi and bring him back to his home island. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could also establish Yoshi’s friendship with Mario and Luigi, as he’s a reliable and loyal friend who always delivers.

It’s possible Yoshi will assist Mario and Luigi on their next adventure — be it helping them defeat Bowser again, should he escape from his cage and return to full size, or going up against a new enemy threatening to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom and its neighbors. Conversely, Yoshi might be needing Mario and Luigi’s help liberating Yoshi’s home from Bowser, which occurred in Super Mario World. Whatever the case might be, bringing Yoshi to The Super Mario Bros. Movie further expands the animated film’s worldbuilding, and shapes the relationships Mario and Luigi have already built and continue to nurture.
