Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Post-Credits Scene Teases Sequel, Says Chris Pratt

Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Post-Credits Scene Teases Sequel, Says Chris Pratt

The Super Mario Bros. Movie star Chris Pratt claims the video game adaptation’s post-credit scene teases a potential sequel. When Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are inadvertently sucked through a portal, Luigi is captured by the tyrannical leader of the Koopa race, King Bowser. Mario must partner with notable characters from the iconic video game franchise to defeat Bowser’s invading army to protect the Mushroom Kingdom and free his brother.

While speaking with CBR, Pratt revealed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s post-credit scene teases a potential sequel. Without divulging any details, the actor says he’s “very excited” by the prospect. However, Pratt shared that there has been talk of adapting the popular Nintendo GameCube video game Luigi’s Mansion. Read what Pratt divulged below:

“Listen, there’s like, at the end of the film, there’s a post-credit sequence that gives you a taste of what the sequel could be about. And that gets me very, very excited. But there’s been talk of Luigi’s Mansion. That was a GameCube game. I think that would be great.”

What Could Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Be About

Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Post-Credits Scene Teases Sequel, Says Chris Pratt

With The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiere a week away, the possibility of a sequel will cause speculation among longtime franchise fans. Famed Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto debuted the Mario series 40 years ago, spawning a vast multimedia franchise with a wealth of lore and characters to tap for a potential sequel to the highly-anticipated animated adaptation film. As Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) play significant roles in the upcoming movie, perhaps a follow-up movie will focus on one of these characters.

Pratt’s comments indicate that a sequel can adapt the popular Luigi’s Mansion series of games. Released in 2001 for the GameCube, the game made a rare move to focus on Luigi instead of Mario, following the character on a haunted house adventure filled with ghosts. The game proved to be a resounding success, spawning two direct sequels.

As Luigi may find himself imprisoned within Bowser’s castle walls, it is understandable that a sequel would give Luigi more screen time. As the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers have shown, the sequences in Bowser’s castle emulate the Luigi’s Mansion game with its haunted house imagery. With the Luigi games referenced in the film already, a sequel may choose to go in a different direction and take inspiration from another popular entry to include Super Mario Galaxy, a game that saw Mario and his friends travel through space to various worlds. For now, the post-credits scene will likely hint at the direction for The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s sequel and expand the universe.
