Seth Rogen is considering a potential The Super Mario Bros. Movie spinoff about Donkey Kong. Rogen voices Donkey Kong in the upcoming game adaptation, and the movie sees Kong in a new role as he unites with Mario. While Nintendo typically pits Mario and Donkey Kong against each other, the movie starts a new chapter for the characters as they team up to defeat Bowser. Donkey Kong is only a side character, but Rogen thinks the Kongs have more potential.
In an interview with Collider, Rogen discusses a possible Donkey Kong spinoff, sharing his surprising inspiration. The actor compared the Fast & Furious franchise to Donkey Kong, citing the similarities between the two properties. Appearances by the Kong family in The Super Mario Bros. “There’s a lot of opportunity there. I think the family unit of the Kongs seems to be — and if the Fast and Furious movies have taught us anything [it’s] that it’s all about family.”
Donkey Kong And Fast & Furious Are Very Similar Franchises
While they aren’t often mentioned in the same breath, Donkey Kong and Fast & Furious have a lot in common. Both franchises follow anti-heroes who commit similar crimes. Dom Toretto illegally did street races, hijacked cars, and stole millions throughout the franchise. In comparison, Donkey Kong races in Mario Kart, steals a hoard of bananas, and fights off K. Rool. Both characters commit these crimes in the name of their family.
Like Dom, Donkey Kong also has an impressive family. There are many Kongs introduced through the games, including Cranky Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Kiddy Kong. Like how Fast & Furious movies have each member take on a specific role, every Kong brings a special skill to the table, coming together to complete their mission. The two families also share a love of racing, with the Kongs showing off their drift skills throughout the Mario Kart games.
With the same formula as Fast & Furious and what looks to be a great ensemble cast with the Kongs, Donkey Kong’s appearance could set up a possible spinoff. The two series are more alike, and the similarities could indicate the success of Donkey Kong spinoffs and expand the Super Mario universe. Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, and Kiddy Kong are the only Kongs confirmed to be in The Super Mario Bros. Movie so far, but hopefully, a spinoff introduces the rest of the Kong family in a Fast & Furious fashion.
