Super Mario 64’s Castle Appears In Goldeneye 007 Thanks To Modder

The Nintendo 64 holds many nostalgic memories for people who spent long hours playing some games so great they still hold up today. Two of these games are Super Mario 64, considered by many to be one of the best platformers ever made, and Goldeneye 007, which still holds the title of the best first-person shooter by many gamers. Naturally, a modder thought that meshing the two together would make for the perfect game, and watching Mario running around with a silenced PP7 is enough to convince any fans of this.

These two games, being as popular as they are, have made many appearances in games they don’t belong in, no matter how much it seems like they should. Goldeneye 007 snuck into the new Half-Life: Alyx, appearing as a VR mod that brought the 1997 game into the modern realm of technology. Elements from Super Mario 64 have also popped up in other games, like a mod that added the mad piano as a playable character in the original Super Smash Bros., the haunted instrument even having its own set of moves, many of which put its terrifying set of teeth to good use.

The mod that puts the famous Italian plumber into the shoes of James Bond is an entirely original mission in Goldeneye 007. YouTuber Graslu00 has created a level that takes place in Princess Peach’s castle and he shows it off in a video, running smoothly at 60fps, that begins where Super Mario 64 always begins; outside the doors to the castle. Inside, Mario is met with a team of Koopa Troopas who are all packing heat. Graslu00 takes out the enemies, all looking very convincing in their nineties-styled sunglasses, as he moves through a perfect replica of the castle from Super Mario 64. None of the levels are actually accessible, but Mario must find the keys to the Big Star Doors to get through them and fight Bowser on the other side of each these. Near the end of the mission Mario can pick up the legendary Golden Gun, which he satisfyingly uses to one-shot Bowser and complete the mission.

Goldeneye 007 is a legendary game itself as it defined the genre of FPS games. Not that there weren’t FPS games before Goldeneye 007, just that they were considered Doom clones until this game came along and proved what could really be done with an FPS. Many still believe that the N64 classic is as good as it will ever get, but recently a new 007 game was announced that might be a worthy successor. Project 007 will be developed by IO Interactive, the developer of the Hitman games who have some experience with stealth and assassination, so a James Bond game should be right up their alley.

Goldeneye 007’s fanbase is as alive as it was 23 years ago, as can be seen by this impressively made mod which obviously has a lot of passion behind it. The blend of two classic N64 titles works seamlessly and packs two games’ worth of nostalgia into one punch. It looks like a lot of fun to run around Peach’s castle in Goldeneye 007, especially since this time Mario has a gun and a license to kill.
