Super Mario 3D World Reveals Clever Trick For Stealing Clones

A hidden trick in Super Mario 3D World allows players to steal other player’s double cherry clones. The double cherry is just one of many power-ups that can be obtained throughout Mario’s adventure in the Sprixie Kingdom.

Super Mario 3D World has had multiplayer functionality ever since its launch on the Wii U, but its rerelease on the Switch has added online multiplayer to play with friends. This allows for more access to the chaotic multiplayer that the game features. Co-op functions similarly to the New Super Mario Bros. series in that players can compete with each other and cause all sorts of messy situations should they so choose. Super Mario Maker 2 also implemented online multiplayer after its launch, though the quality has been said to be barely functional, if it works at all.

The Super Mario Bros 35th Anniversary Japanese Twitter account has posted a video detailing this hidden trick. When another player ground pounds on someone who used a double cherry, they will steal their clone and convert it into a copy of their own character. This can also be done back to someone who has stolen a clone, and can be done as long as at least one player has a clone. This trick can be helpful for platforms that require a certain number of clones, and has remained decently well hidden to many players ever since the game’s release in 2013.

Super Mario 3D World features a variety of power-ups throughout the game. The classic fire flower is helpful for clearing through enemies, while the boomerang flower can do the same and also retrieve collectables such as green stars. The tanooki suit makes a return from Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Bros. 3, allowing similar gliding abilities to those possessed by Princess Peach. But the power-up that’s the most prominent throughout the game is the cat suit, which can allow Mario to climb to new heights and scratch enemies with its claws.

This newly discovered trick brings even more variety to the game’s assortment of power-ups. The double cherry is used for both puzzles and platforming, and having the ability to balance out how many clones each player has can encourage either cooperation or infighting amongst players who want all the clones for themselves. However players choose to play through Super Mario 3D World‘s multiplayer, this is just another tool for players to have more fun with what the game offers.
