Super Mario 3D All-Stars Gets New Camera Options After Fan Demand

Nintendo has listened to its fans’ demands and will be giving Super Mario 3D All-Stars new in-game camera options. Nintendo released Super Mario 3D All-Stars on the Switch as part of its celebration of the franchise’s 35th anniversary last month. The trilogy of Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy was purchased by thousands of Mario fans on its release, but the lack of camera inversion has been a source of frustration for many. Its lack was quite an oversight by Nintendo, especially considering that the GameCube version of Mario Sunshine featured camera inversion at its release in 2002.

The re-release of these Nintendo classics was met with some mixed reviews after the reveal in September. Some players found that their copy of 3D All-Stars would crash and glitch at points (although this was later revealed to be the fault of modded consoles), while others went as far as accusing Nintendo of creating these titles for the Switch simply as a cash grab. Nintendo continually faced complaints for a myriad of reasons, including the change in controls from the original games, the limited release time, the poor menu design and even the price tag.

Many fans who felt unhappy at the controls, for Mario Sunshine specifically, will be pleased to hear that Nintendo is taking steps to remedy these complaints. On November 16, a free software update will be coming  for Super Mario 3D All-Stars. This update will finally allow gamers to invert their camera controls and it will be available for all three titles in the game pack, not just Mario Sunshine.

For gamers new to the Mario franchise, this update may seem incredibly mundane. However, for fans returning to the series as a nostalgic step back to their youth, this will update will be a real boon. Many gamers today still use inverted camera controls and can credit Mario Sunshine as the game that started this way of gameplay for them.

Nintendo has not mentioned anything more yet about a release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Switch. Alongside the inversion issue, this was another one of the more prolific complaints among fans of the Mario franchise on the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Many gamers felt that Nintendo had missed a great opportunity by omitting Super Mario Galaxy 2 from the Switch collection. Nintendo may yet be able to redeem itself further if it finally does decide to remake the title for the Nintendo Switch, something that would delight many fans of the series.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is available for Nintendo Switch.
