Suits: LA’s New Character Has A Bigger Challenge Than Its Harvey And Mike Replacements

Suits: LA’s New Character Has A Bigger Challenge Than Its Harvey And Mike Replacements

The Suits spinoff, Suits: LA has a bigger challenge in nailing its newest character than developing its Harvey and Mike replacements. Producer and writer Aaron Korsh revives the Suits universe more than four years since the flagship series wrapped up on USA Network. Fueled by Suits‘ unexpected streaming domination, the new show will expand the franchise with a new law firm on the West Coast. Instead of acquisitions and mergers, Suit: LA‘s lawyers will focus on legal matters in the entertainment industry. Stephen Amell and Josh McDermitt will play the show’s lead roles, Ted Black and Stuart Lane, respectively.

Korsh is taking some of the elements that made Suits great and putting a new spin on them for the upcoming offshoot. Black and Lane’s relationship will be significantly different than Harvey and Mike’s, but, likely, their bond will also be the backbone of the show. While they will be the main attraction, the world around them will have to be fully fleshed out for the project to work. Beyond them, the cast of Suits: LA also includes a female lead in Lex Scott Davis starring as Erica Rollins, who poses a bigger challenge for the endeavor.

Suits’ Original Female Characters Sets The Bar High For LA’s Rebecca

Crafting the next Harvey and Mike tandem with Ted and Stuart would be easier for Korsh. As long as Amell and McDermitt have the same chemistry as Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams, and they can effectively portray their individual character, it won’t be difficult for the viewers to get invested. However, developing Erica is much more challenging because of what he was able to achieve with Suits‘ core female characters. Korsh did an amazing job writing empowered but not stereotyped women. Jessica Pearson, Donna Paulsen, and Rachel Zane were fleshed-out characters who were equally interesting as their male counterparts.

Based on the official brief for Davis’ character, Erica is a thirty-something Black woman who works at Suits: LA‘s new entertainment firm. Despite her current position, she endeavors to become the head of the organization’s entertainment division. The character description sounds promising, but Korsh knows better than to hinge the whole role on her being ambitious. Erica needs to be well-rounded like her Suits predecessors. The original show set up the bar pretty high for its female characters, so there will be an expectation that Erica will be at par with those who came before her.

Will Any Of The Original Suits Female Character Return In The Spinoff?

Suits: LA makes it easy to bring back Mike and Harvey, considering that the dynamic duo is now based in Seattle. This means that, in terms of narrative, a cameo from Donna and Rachel is very much a possibility. Meanwhile, Jessica can easily fly from Chicago to LA. For what it’s worth, Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres have both expressed their interest in appearing, although the chances of Meghan Markle coming out of acting retirement are very slim to none. Still, it would be great to see any of them interact with Ericka.
