Succession season 4 is wrapping up the last few storylines of the beloved HBO comedy-drama series, with the show finally answering some of its biggest questions in Succession season 4, episode 8. Season 4 has already been a rollercoaster ride, with it showing the ups and downs of Shiv and Tom’s relationship, going into detail about the GoJo deal, and even revealing the shocking death of Succession antagonist Logan Roy. Season 4, episode 8 picks up on the eve of Logan’s funeral, which just so happens to be the night of the presidential election. Clashing opinions and varied interests make this episode pretty tense, and here are its biggest reveals.

6 Kendall & Roman Learn The Truth About Shiv & Matsson

Succession Season 4, Episode 8 Recap & Ending Explained: 6 Election Night Twists

One of Succession season 4’s biggest storylines has been the GoJo deal, with Logan Roy dying in the middle of Lukas Matsson’s buyout of Waystar Royco. Although Waystar Royco co-CEOs Kendall and Roman Roy have been against the deal, Shiv has secretly been pulling for it. Throughout season 4, Shiv has been feeding Lukas Matsson confidential information about the inner workings of Waystar Royco, hoping to play her cards right so that she gets a good spot at GoJo when the deal goes through. Although she’s been pretty good about covering her tracks so far, the truth is finally revealed in Succession season 4, episode 8.

After the events of Succession season 4, episode 7, Greg went out for a night on the town with Lukas Matsson. There, Greg discovered Shiv’s con, deciding to hold onto that information for leverage. However, that didn’t last long, as he quickly tells Kendall about Shiv’s deal with Matsson near the end of season 4, episode 8. This revelation comes out in the midst of Kendall discovering another one of Shiv’s lies, making his reaction even worse. Kendall and Roman’s reaction to this information was definitely rash, but they were genuinely hurt when learning about Shiv’s betrayal. This was a huge cliffhanger, showing that Shiv’s world is crumbling around her.

5 Mencken Is Declared President By ATN (& Tom Makes The Call)

Justin Kirk as Jeryd Mencken in Succession season 4

The presidential race between Republican Jeryd Mencken and Democrat Daniel Jiménez is at the center of season 4, episode 8, and it’s a close one. The race was going to be decided by the results of Wisconsin, but there was an issue. One of the state’s polling centers caught fire, burning an undetermined amount of notes. Although the results up until that point leaned Mencken, it was believed that the burnt ballots would have swung the state blue, giving Jiménez the presidency.

Meanwhile at ATN, the Roy siblings and Tom had to make a decision. While Shiv believed that ATN should wait to call the race, as the Wisconsin votes would have changed the results, Roman’s political leanings led to him arguing that ATN should call it in favor of Mencken. The decision is Tom’s, with him eventually making the choice to call the race for Mencken. This could have a huge impact, as it will make it even more difficult to recant later on down the line, opening ATN to various lawsuits.

4 Roman Helps Mencken Become President Because He’ll Kill The GoJo Deal

Each Roy sibling has their own opinions on the election, with the conservative Roman heavily leaning towards Republican candidate Jeryd Mencken. Roman and Mencken already had a relationship before the election, with the two being in contact throughout season 4. The main reason for Roman’s support, however, is that Mencken has promised to block the GoJo deal if he gets elected president. Roman’s main goal in previous episodes has been to stop Matsson from buying Waystar Royco, and he has realized that using Mencken is the best way to do this.

3 Kendall Is Conflicted Over The Presidential Race… But Sides With Roman

Unlike Roman, who is pro-Mencken, and Shiv, who is pro-Jiménez, Kendall has been conflicted. On the one hand, Kendall knows that Mencken will block the GoJo deal, allowing him to stay CEO of Waystar Royco. On the other hand, Kendall believes that Mencken is a fascist, with him being worried that his daughter could get hurt if Mencken wins the race. However, Kendall makes his mind up after Shiv’s lies are uncovered, causing Kendall to side with Roman and Mencken. Kendall will most likely come to regret this decision down the line, but as of now, Kendall sided with his wallet rather than his heart.

2 Connor Drops Out Of The Presidential Race (So He Can Be Rewarded)

Connor Roy in Succession

Connor Roy has been the libertarian presidential candidate throughout Succession season 4, and although he knew that he couldn’t win, he was hoping to get 1% of the vote. However, Connor’s voter base was cutting into Mencken’s, meaning that Roman needed Connor to drop out of the race. At first, Connor refused, but he finally decided to concede on election night. In return for dropping out, Roman and Mencken are rewarding him, with Connor hoping to get a governmental job in Slovenia. However, Connor has some choice words to say during his concession speech, with him possibly riling up his voter base to a dangerous point.
