Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer promise there will be more exciting guest stars in season 4 of their beloved Netflix show. Stranger Things quickly became a breakout hit in 2016 thanks to its central premise, which evoked the themes of classic 80s sci-fi and adventure films. Plus, Stranger Things seemed to be one of the rare shows to feature genuinely talented child actors, with Millie Bobbie Brown (Eleven) even being nominated for Emmys for her performance. Each subsequent season has proven to be just as popular among fans even as the Duffer brothers continue to explore the mystery of the Upside Down and the creatures that reside there.
Stranger Things might be best known for its blast of 80s nostalgia, but it has also amassed quite a few notable guest stars during its run. Season 2 introduced Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) and Paul Reiser into the cast, and season 3 featured The Princess Bride‘s Cary Elwes in a recurring role. Understandably, fans are curious about who might join Stranger Things in season 4, especially because the show’s continuously-growing popularity could draw in some thrilling names.
That seems to be what the Duffer brothers were hinting at when they sat down recently for an interview with Deadline. Much of the conversation was focused on Stranger Things and its success, but at one point it drifted toward the topic of guest stars. While no names were actually given, the Duffer brothers did say, “We have a couple of cool ones this year. It’s a really fun way to meet one of your icons. You know, write a part for them and see if they want to do it.”
Anticipation is high for Stranger Things season 4, especially since the last episode of season 3 ended with a major cliffhanger. It initially sounded like the new season would be on track for release in either late 2020 or early 2021, but the coronavirus pandemic threw a wrench into any set plans. Production on Stranger Things season 4 was shut down in March, and no reports have suggested they have since gotten back to work. Most likely, they will resume soon as soon as the set can properly accommodate all the necessary health precautions. Luckily, however, all the scripts for season 4 have been completed, so it should be a smooth return.
The Duffers’ new comments will likely inspire some fervent speculation among fans. Who will be the next exciting guest star to join Stranger Things? Seeing as production was supposed to be well underway at this point, it isn’t surprising that the season has already been cast. The real question now is when Netflix will actually announce the new guest stars. Perhaps a reveal could come with the news that production on season 4 has begun again, or maybe they will wait until filming is complete. There are several possibilities at hand, so fans will just have to wait and see what Netflix chooses.
