Strange World’s Rotten Tomatoes is Way Lower Than Disney and Pixar Average

Strange World’s Rotten Tomatoes is Way Lower Than Disney and Pixar Average

Strange World is the newest animated movie from Disney, and it’s received generally favorable reviews, but how does its Rotten Tomatoes score compare to other Disney animated films? While Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar are two different animation studios owned by Disney, the more recent animated films from Disney have used a 3D animation style often compared to Pixar.

Going back to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Disney is known for a very particular brand of hand-drawn animation distinctly different from Pixar’s style debuting with Toy Story in 1995; however, in the mid-2000s, Disney announced it was abandoning hand-drawn 2D animation in favor of 3D animation (a style often compared to the look pioneered by Pixar) beginning with Chicken Little in 2005. So, excluding The Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh (the only hand-drawn animation movies from Disney after Chicken Little), here’s how Strange World compares to other Walt Disney Animation Studios movies and Pixar movies.

Strange World Has the Lowest Disney Animation Rotten Tomatoes Score in 15 Years

Strange World’s Rotten Tomatoes is Way Lower Than Disney and Pixar Average

Strange World has a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 72 percent, lower than every Disney Animation studio movie other than Meet the Robinsons in 2007 and Chicken Little in 2005. Altogether, the 13 Walt Disney Animation Studios 3D animation movies prior to Strange World averaged 84 percent, 12 points higher than Strange World. Strange World‘s 76 percent score from Rotten Tomatoes’ Top Critics is also 4 points lower than the Disney Animation average of 80 percent and its 40 percent audience score is the lowest of any Walt Disney Animation Studios movie, less than half of the 81 percent Disney Animation average.

Only 2 Pixar Movies Have a Lower Rotten Tomatoes Score Than Strange World

Pixar’s average Rotten Tomatoes scores are even better than those of Walt Disney Animation Studios, so the disparity between Strange World and Pixar is even greater. Strange World’s 27 percent Rotten Tomatoes score is 17 points lower than Pixar’s 89 percent, its 76 percent Top Critic Score is 11 points lower than Pixar’s 87 percent average, and its 40 percent audience score is 42 points less than Pixar’s 82 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience average. Out of 26 Pixar movies, the only movies with a lower Rotten Tomatoes score than Strange World‘s 72 percent are Cars 2 with 39 percent and Cars 3 with 69 percent.

Of course, all reviews are subjective, so a Rotten Tomatoes score summarizing dozens of subjective reviews naturally doesn’t speak for everyone. While a significant portion of critics and audiences enjoyed Strange World, but it still has a mixed-positive Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and a mixed-negative Rotten Tomatoes score from audiences and doesn’t meet the high standard set by other Disney animation and Pixar movies.
