Stranded Deep: How To Make The Hobo Stove

Stranded Deep is a tropical survival simulation game that will punish players for not thinking strategically. Nourishment is essential in this game and the most important tool to have regarding this is the hobo stove. This guide will show how to build one and what to do with it.

Stranded Deep was released on January 23, 2015, by Beam Team Games and players are jumped in the skin of a survivor that crashed on to a deserted island deep within the heart of the Pacific. The procedurally generated events cause life-threatening situations to crop up and players will need to constantly scour the environment and find the necessary resources to survive. In the beginning, getting started may seem a bit overwhelming. With dynamic weather changes and a 24-hour cycle of rotating time, players will need to look after their; hunger, thirst, health, and sleep. Thus, exploring the ocean is an adventure in itself. It’s a bottomless blue void giving an endless supply of sea creatures to hunt and even legendary sea monsters to battle. Hunting animals and looking around the island will enable players to collect the raw materials needed to craft shelter and other tools.

Since nutrition is such a vital element to the gameplay, players will need to find a way to build a decent utensil to cook with and stay warm. Of course, there are other tools and weapons that will need to be built, as well. However, the hobo stove can really help players get the proper nutrition to brave the weather and survive life-threatening encounters. Therefore, it’s recommended that it is built as soon as possible. Naturally, there are very specific things needed to build one and it’ll take a little effort to make it work effectively. If players take the initiative and build a hobo stove, it’ll make life on the island a little more bearable and will put some ease on players while trying to survive.

The hobo stove is an additional attachment to the standard campfire that players will first establish early in the game. Even though it’s limited with its nutritional stats, it’s a good starting point and one of the better options to cook food. Food spoiling can be a nuisance in this game if it’s not cooked properly and the hobo stove is an excellent way to rectify that. This guide will explain the bare basics of how to get started and establishing a functioning hobo stove within the beginning of the game.

  • CampfirePlayers will need to find 4 sticks that can be collected by crafting a crude axe and cutting down Ficus Trees. Also, locating drift piles strewn about on the shore and chopping them up is a good alternative. If players need logs, Palm Trees are the best way to go. After obtaining the required sticks go into the inventory page, select the sticks, and place them on the ground. The sticks will be piled up and ready for igniting by using kindling.
  • KindlingFinding kindling in Stranded Deep is fairly simple. Players will need to accumulate a handful of sticks and store them in inventory. It only takes 2 sticks to start a fire and they will need to be rubbed together.
  • FirepitOnce players have a basic campfire established and mastered the process of kindling a fire, the next step is upgrading the campfire into a firepit. This will start a foundation that’ll give the option to branch off into three or more upgrades for the campfire down the road. As of right now, a simple ‘firepit’ will do. So, to make a firepit players will need to find 6 rocks and just simply place them around the campfire. Going to the inventory (quick select page) will show the ‘firepit’ option that’ll be automatically available after placing the rocks. Choosing ‘firepit’ in the menu will place the rocks in a circle and it’ll be ready to light. The fire pit will increase the cooking time between 1-2 minutes.
  • Barrel ScrapWith the fire pit built, players will then need to find some barrel scrap. Finding scrap can be a bit of a venture since they’re most likely found in shipwrecks. Shipwrecks are generally found in shallow waters throughout the various islands. Once a shipwreck is found, barrels will be tied down to the decks so a cutting tool (axe or knife) will be needed to free them. Once they’re loose, players will need to drag, roll, or transport them to the required location. Roll the barrel next to the fire pit and the option in the crafting menu to build a hobo stove will be ready.
  • Meat to CookTo start cooking meat on the hobo stove, simply ignite the sticks through the opening on the base. After the fire starts, players will be able to cook several chunks of meat on the grid. The quantity of food for the hobo stove can be pretty much infinite, as long as everything fits on the grid. This stove can cook BBQ meat, which takes a much longer duration to spoil in comparison to other meats. It’s not quite as long as smoked meat, but it’s a good alternative.

Stranded Deep provides a lot of wiggle room for players to experiment and see what kind of tropical paradise or purgatory they can build for themselves. There’s a satisfaction to be gained when building things out of nothing and watching everything evolve into a suitable home. There’s certainly some trial and error to deal with and there’s no question that’ll be frustrating at times. Of course, the old adage; “nothing ventured; nothing gained” holds true on this deserted chunk of land in the Pacific. Even with its practical gameplay, this game holds a lesson toward players being responsible for their belongings and savaging rations in which building the hobo stove teaches.

Stranded Deep is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Macintosh, Microsoft Window and Linux
