Storm Is Officially Taking Magneto’s Place (& Costume) In X-Men Lore

Warning: Spoilers for X-Men Red #7 aheadA major revelation about the X-Men’s next universe-altering event, Sins of Sinister, has just been revealed by Marvel Comics at NYCC, with a new series titled Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants. The miniseries will focus on Ororo Munroe as leader of the Brotherhood as they fight to get revenge for the destruction of the planet Arakko. It seems that Storm is taking on Magneto‘s role (and even aspects of his costume) in the Marvel Universe.

The sins of Mister Sinister are coming to haunt the Krakoan Age as Marvel’s Merry Mutants are thrust into a “...horrifying timeline that makes the Age of Apocalypse look like the X-Men Swimsuit Special,” and the people of Arakko are no exception. With the recent debut of Storm and her impressive Brotherhood during Uranos’ assault on Arakko during Judgment Day, it is no surprise that in the future of Sins of Sinister, Ororo and her team are still going strong, inspired by Magneto’s recent death in Marvel’s main reality.

Along with two other Sins of Sinister series, Immoral X-Men and Nightcrawlers, Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants – written by X-Men Red mastermind Al Ewing with art by the talented Paco Medina – will show the future of the Krakoan Age years after the horrifying machinations of Sinister have come to fruition. Sinister has been shown to be the demise of Krakoa since it’s inception, something Moira X tried to warn Charles and Magneto about, with her past lives showing that Sinister’s chimera projects would eventually lead to the fall of Arakko, Krakoa, and the destruction of the mutant race. It appears that in this latest iteration of Sinister’s triumph, the entirety of the planet Arakko will face destruction, with Storm and her Brotherhood seeking revenge against Sinister. Storm Is Taking Over Magneto’s Legacy

Storm Is Officially Taking Magneto’s Place (& Costume) In X-Men Lore

FACE THE WRATH OF ARAKKO! Ten years from now, Mars has been destroyed – and now STORM wants revenge! To get it, the New Brotherhood of Arakko will battle their way through hell to seek the greatest secret of the Sinister Age…but are they fighting to save the world — or end it? And who is the man called IRONFIRE? The Sins of Sinister wash over the world of X-MEN RED as the newest X-Crossover builds!

Storm has long been a part of the new Arakko, acting as it’s Regent and sitting in the highest seat on the Great Ring, but the death of Magneto in X-Men Red #7 prompted her to take his former position on the Seat of Loss, meaning Storm has now not only replaced Max on the Great Ring, but also as the leader of the Brotherhood, the formerly villainous team he is most often associated with. It appears the Brotherhood may even be instrumental in attempting to end Sinister’s reign, destroying the world he has created in order to create something better.

Of course, Storm is an incredibly iconic and powerful mutant in her own right, already an established leader of the X-Men and former Queen of Wakanda, but in leading the warrior society, it seems she will now be fulfilling Magneto’s usual role as the rogue who pushes the fight for mutant survival further than anyone else. The stunning cover for Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 – gorgeously drawn by Leinil Francis Yu – shows Storm at full power wearing an epic new costume, a clear homage to Magneto’s classic look, with Ororo donning a Magneto-style helmet, cape, and studded collar, showing that Storm has continued to honor the death of Magneto even in the far future.

Ororo Windrider has been a major figure of the Krakoan Age since it’s start in 2019, and Storm continues to be placed front and center as a part of the X-Men’s past and future, with the Sins of Sinister highlighting the ongoing power and importance of the Omega-level mutant, one who has taken over from Magneto as the Earth-shaking leader of the Brotherhood.

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants will debut in stores on February 8, 2023.
