Static is Setting Up the Return of a Classic Animated Series Hero

Warning! Spoilers for Static: Season One #6

In Static: Season One‘s finale, it was hinted that Adam Evans AKA Rubberband Man will be coming to Season Two. The brother of Ebon could be the next addition to Virgil Hawkins’ team of family and friends.

As the first phase of the Milestone reboot wraps up, the foundation is being set for future stories. In Icon and Rocket #6, Static came to the assistance of the titular superheroes in the first major Dakotaverse crossover, with a villain teased for a confrontation down the line. In the special one-shot Milestones in History, it has been alluded to that an event will occur which will alter the trajectory of new comics. Static: Season One #6 features a reveal with many implications. The issue was written by Vita Ayala and features art by Nikolas Draper-Ivey.

At the end of Static #6, the shadowy meta-human villain Ebon appears and reveals himself as the true big bad of the series, while referencing his brother. In the animated series Static Shock, Ebon’s brother is Adam Evans, a meta-human also known as Rubberband Man. The rapper uses his elastic shapeshifting powers for selfish ambition and seeks vengeance on those who did him wrong, but eventually becomes a superhero alongside Static. As Ebon is aggressively searching for information regarding his brother’s whereabouts, it seems evident that Adam is the source of his motivation. After the Big Bang, it’s possible that he was displaced and went missing.

Static is Setting Up the Return of a Classic Animated Series Hero

While Static: Season Two is likely to take inspiration from the animated iteration, Rubberband Man first appeared in comics in Static #33 (1996). At the time, he was called Karmon Stringer, but he didn’t bear much similarity to his animated counterpart aside from his power set. Since he is made of rubber, Static’s electricity doesn’t harm him.

As Ebon is likely to be a primary antagonist in the second season of Static among other villains, it seems like a strong possibility that Adam Evans will show up. The continuation could also feature other animated characters from Static Shock, many of whom have not appeared in comics. If Ebon tracks down his brother, and he eventually betrays his life of crime as he did in the animated series, it will only add more fuel to the fire. Assuming that Virgil and his friends could be the ones to influence Rubberband Man’s redemption arc, Ebon’s motivations to eliminate the hero could be made even more personal. According to the first season’s finale, Static: Season Two is set to begin this summer.
