Static Artist Teases New Costume Design For Season Two

There might be another costume upgrade for Milestone’s Static in the near future. Static: Season One artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey has teased another design for Virgil Hawkins’ superhero persona in the series’ next season.

Throughout his comic book history, Static has undergone many changes and has worn a variety of costumes. In the ‘90s, Milestone introduced Virgil with dark blue tights and a cap. With the animated reinvention Static Shock, he received a more grounded look, wearing seemingly regular clothes that he sports into a heroic uniform, including a new lightning emblem on his chest. When Static returned to comics, he wore a similar suit, as readers had come to expect the popular design. With The New 52, Static received a less favorable costume, that seemingly misunderstood his appeal. As Milestone returned with DC Comics last year, series artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey revised Virgil’s costume again, taking inspiration from his earlier incarnations.

Although Virgil seemed to have a new official suit in the first season finale of Static, following his first prototype uniform, Draper-Ivey is teasing another look is on the way. In a post to social media giving fans a better look at the design, he refers to it as the “first look” for Static in Season Two set for this summer. This could infer several possibilities for the costume which his sister Sharon made for him. Apparently, the sentimental value might not enough reason for him to continue to wear it. However, there is a chance this relates to its potential demise. The creative team of Vita Ayala and Draper-Ivey have teased a more cinematic second season with higher stakes.

Fans have voiced their appreciation for the latest costume, but Draper-Ivey has expressed some desire for additional change. Within the same week, he also shared alternate costume designs for Static on social media. The other designs differ drastically from the version that Milestone chose to go with, including a look more faithful to the animated series’ first two seasons. Although fans have enjoyed Static’s Season One finale suit, it could only stick around for less than a season.

While the initial prototype suit that Static wore designed by Curtis Metcalf AKA Hardware was intended as armor, Sharon’s homemade costume is less durable. Its vulnerability could lead Virgil to lose the suit in a battle with other bang babies, potentially including Ebon who is set to be the main antagonist of Static: Season Two.
