Stargirl Season 2 Has The Perfect Candidate For The Next Green Lantern

Stargirl Season 2 Has The Perfect Candidate For The Next Green Lantern

Stargirl set up the search for a new Green Lantern in its first season, and they have the perfect candidate they can introduce in season 2. In the first season of the DC teen drama, Courtney Whitmore made it her mission to revive the Justice Society of America as she began her superhero journey. While she learned more about the former JSA that Pat Dugan was part of, Courtney saw a need to rebuild the Golden Age superhero group. As part of her mission to stop the Injustice Society, Courtney took all the heroes’ former costumes and weapons before going on her search to create the next generation of JSA.

Along the way, she befriended Yolanda Montez, Beth Chapel, and Rick Tyler, who became the new Wildcat, Doctor Mid-Nite, and Hourman respectively. But as viewers saw with the first JSA, there were more than 4 members on the team including The Flash, Doctor Fate, and the Green Lantern. The Emerald Knight that Stargirl established in this universe was Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern whose Power Battery Courtney took with her. Being believed to be dead after having fought the ISA, Stargirl showrunner Geoff Johns has confirmed that they’ll definitely be exploring what happens to the Power Battery, suggesting that someone else will become the new Green Lantern.

Given how large the Green Lantern Corps are, there are certainly several candidates that Stargirl could use in the second season. But most of them have actually never had any JSA history in the comics, except for one. While Alan’s history hasn’t been explored a lot in the series, the Golden Age Green Lantern actually has two children in the mythology who become superheroes. One of them is Jade who actually becomes a Green Lantern (which is the character that Stargirl should introduce as part of the new JSA). In the comics, Jade and her twin brother Todd Rice (a.k.a. the superhero Obsidian) are the biological kids of Alan and the supervillain Rose Canton a.k.a. Thorn. Rose gave them up for adoption because of her concerns that they’d be hurt by her due to her other personality Thorn.

Stargirl Season 2 Has The Perfect Candidate For The Next Green Lantern

While Jade and Todd, after finding each other, tried to join the JSA, they ended up becoming part of Infinity Inc. that consisted of other superheroes who tried to become members of the Golden Age league. Jade’s way of being a Green Lantern is a little unique compared to the other known Emerald Knights. After having been exposed to magical energies for as long as Alan had, it resulted in Jade inherited the ability to create green energy. She ends up eventually getting a ring by Kyle Rayner after losing her powers.

Since HBO Max’s Green Lantern series is already going to use Alan along with several other members, Stargirl can be another DC project that can introduce one more famous Lantern with Jade. She could come in as trying to become a member of the JSA or end up setting up the show’s take on Infinity Inc. It’s also possible that Stargirl would slightly reimagine Jade to fit into the continuity they have set up. Since they have revealed so little about Alan in this universe, there are multiple directions they can take with her as the JSA’s next Green Lantern. Given that Jade has never appeared outside the comics, Stargirl would be the character’s first media appearance.

It’s hard to imagine who else Stargirl would use as the JSA’s next Green Lantern other than Jade. With Alan’s Power Battery being with Courtney, there’s the perfect set up to introduce her to follow her father’s legacy. While Courtney has the Power Battery, she doesn’t seem to have the ring. When Pat discovered that she had it, he said it’s useless without the ring, confirming that it’s not with either of them. A potential scenario is that Jade somehow has the ring and now needs the battery to get it charged. However Stargirl season 2 tackles the Green Lantern storyline, it’ll hopefully include Jade.
